Somebdoy convince me Cooper is the right choice

I've watched 3 minutes of union my whole life so I am not qualified to bag Cooper....

BUT...

Chances are... to get him, we are paying Jarryd Hayne money.

I know everyone here us excited, but is it worth it in a salary capped competition. He may help us next year, but how will 600K spent on a 200 or 300K player affect us in 2012 and beyond.

Are we going to get anywhere near 600K worth of value?

For anything over 400K a half needs all the skills.... ALL OF THEM...

he must have a Long and short kicking and passing game, be a good organiser, a good reader of play, a good running game, good defensively, the ability to break a game open, the ability to get the play right in the 79th min with the scores locked... he must absolutely come to life in the oposition 20.

Can he do it? I'd be surprised if anyone in the Union ranks could join the NRL and produce the above within 60 games.

I really don't think he's the answer but feel free to convince me otherwise.

  • How can we offer 600K a year for a guy who can not tackle?? We will be putting in a player with less first grade experience then Mortimer. The fact that our club are even talking to him concerns me.

HAS EVERYBODY AT THE CLUB LOST THEIR MINDS!!!
  • Okay, here's a synopsis of Quade Cooper:

He has the step of Benji Marshall
He's as quick as Jamie Soward
He has the strength to carry defenders as did the likes of John Simon and Andrew Johns
His passing is absolutely breath taking. He set up a try for the Wallabies a month ago with a pass that Hayne couldn't throw
His kicking game, long or short, is in my opinion better than anyone in the NRL
He has the head wobble and jink of Tim Smith
    His defense is average.

All in all, the guy's a gun. If I had the choice between Cronk, Thurston or Cooper, I'd take Quade Cooper.

That said, we won't get him. He's Rugby No. 1 man - more so than Giteau so what chance to we realistically have?
  • Ok, you don't want Quade Cooper. Who would be your choice?
  • That's not what this is about.... if you spend 1.2 mil on 2 of your players you then build a team of "good" footballers around them. You can't have 3 origin quality props in your ranks, a SOO centre and so forth....
  • I'm starting to think Parra are the problem. Even though I hate them with a passion I have to admit the Bulldogs club are a professional outfit and they would kill for a current team the eels have, but there is talk at Parra about the players/coach/administration being the problem. And now talk about a highly overpaid Union player. WTF is going on????
  • Obviously Cooper would play at half if signed, if your not convinced who would you sign instead that is realistic. It's easy to bag decisions rather than come up with a different alternative.
    • I would have kept Mateo and KK.

Unless something changes with Cronk we don't have a choice but to persist with a combo of Humble, Morts and Robo.... I don't like it, buit we stood back while others signed Mateo, KK, Hodkingson. Our only real choice I think is to look for a quality 7 playing in Toyota Cup.... but that's more long term thinking.... not for next year.

I'm sure we could offer Issac luke mnuch more than what Souths have in their cap.... not a bad addition IMO.
      • The club can't sign/keep all those players unless it used as a storm style salary cap. Most people realise Parra needs a quality half, well to get that player some pain has to be go through by releasing players to get that player.
        • One of the most enlightened remarks made on this forum in a while! Congrats Rod!

"The chances of him being our 6 next year are very low, if he was a serious consideration he would be playing 6 now with dylan at centre. I'll be very surprised if he is our starting 6 next season unless he gets a lot more time there this season. "

"I think Joash is a good player, but from what I've seen only at fullback or on the wing. Those positions we've got pretty well covered, so I guess he's a great back up option. I'd like to see him in 1st grade, but I dont know how he fits in?"
