Six man bench

With the amount of injuries and hia 's get higher in the game would a six man bench be a way forward.

  • How many Arthur's do you think we have ?

  • I reckon 10 man bench. Could be a double bench 5 on each bench..

  • I've always thought we should do something similar to soccer. A 7 man bench but you can only use 4 of them

    • That's not bad either

    • Yeah like it

    • Good idea but would only work if there is reserve grade played before each game and a couple back up, otherwise too many players not playing each week.

Also BA would use have even more players not getting any game time to develop or prove themselves with regular game time like JA and Cartwright.

      • Well, you'd probably have your 2 best bench middles play anyway, like they do now, but it would hige you flexibility in who else you put in the bench.
You can then pick a specialist backup half, a specialist backup dummy half, a backup outside back, a back up edge forward and still have 3 bench middles.
If you get an injury to a key position player, you've got a genuine back up, or if the game is a blow out, you can give a key player an early mark and give your young player sone game time

        Lots of upside

        • More downside then upside if ask me.

Many argued JA and Cartwright were wasted and should have got more time to develop and play in NSW cup for game time.  The extended bench idea only increases that problem and waste places in the squad paying for players that don't get to play unless there is an injury

If back up half and hooker as you said they are specialised positions so would be wasted place in the squad. You would need NRL starting halves/hooker, then bench players and also NSW or Qld cup starters and back up for the bench.  Rotating players in league doesn't work as well as soccer due to lack of combinations and elite halves and hookers are expensive and rare.  Teams can't afford to be playing inexperienced or poor players while having stars on the bench.

    • Not a bad idea

  • In season 2000 with the early start in summer to accommodate the Olympics teams had a 6 man bench for the opening few weeks the 4 interchange and 2 reserves who ever the reserves came on for couldn't come back I'd like a variation of that.

Id like 3 interchange players with 6 subsAnd 2 reserves

some coaches could be technical with it holding a player for x factor or playing a big man for a flat out opening 20 min spell then get the reserve on.

"I did modern day as 1998 onwards as I didn't see them play, as some here haven't. Where I believe majority of people here have seen all the modern day players play.
Plus it frees up some spots like we all know who 5/8 will be but now no idea."
