Should the NRL fear the World GAME?

I know some of you folk would think it a most unlikley scenario.  But the sleeping giant i feel has truly awakened . Yeah I know that theres only two team in Sydney where as the NRL  has eight as it is mentioned by Ron on numerous occasions but I think this is where the problem lies with League. I feel that gallop is a much better operator than Smith (Gallop was at the helm of the NRL TV RIGHTS ) and he will make futball(soccer) the dominant sport in the country. Once there who is to tell them that should remain on the summer slot ....?????

I love both codes and most of us should should embrace both cos who knows what the future brings!!!

thoughts?????

  • Different game played in a different season and need different body shape.

  • Dave Smith needs to go.
Gallop set the game up for the biggest TV deal in NRL's history, and what happens?, the game loses three of its biggest draw cards it's ever had.
What an absolute joke of an administrator.

And for those who think Hayne is going to the NFL for the challenge alone - think again.
    Money talks$$$.
    • Good call.

Smith has a background in Engineering and banking ie management.

Gallop has a background in Sports Admin. He did a hell of a job IMO.

    • lol Gallop???  You are kidding Chief Gallop spent 10 years talking down the game and doing nothing to promote it for his new Limited masters.  You do know he was a Super League lawyer don't you.

Stop reading agenda filled rubbish from News Hack journo's like Slothfield who are upset their great buddy Daaaaaaaaaaaave is no longer holding the game back.

The only reason we got other a billion in the rights was he had been arseholed, Dave Smith is not perfect and has made mistakes but he is still a massive improvement on Gallop.

The Aye League have a few good crowds and Sokka is taking over lol.  The TV ratings are still horrible, their big derby couldn't crack over 200k when an average monday night game on for does over 250k.

  • Had a similar discussion with a couple of mates yesterday in the wake of Saturday nights Sydney Derby at the SFS. The A League is making all the right moves at the moment. Of course, it will be interesting to see where things are in 4-5 years from now… If the Wanderers and Sydney FC were to have a couple of really lean seasons, would the interest still be generated as much as it was last Saturday night? I get the feeling that the Wanderers will be able to maintain healthy crowds at home but perhaps the casual fans that go along to the big games like the one at the SFS the other night might not be inclined to do so….and Sydney FC fans, much like Roosters and Waratahs fans, only seem to get along if their team are table toppers, they drop off pretty quick when things head south.

One of my mate’s said yesterday that League has plateaued, and probably did 2-3 years ago. I tend to agree. I don’t think the product is going to improve from its current state tbh. While I will still watch the slipperies run around next year, Hayne’s departure has knocked my anticipation and expectations for season 2015 into submission.  With a few handy acquisitions and Hayne still in the team, I really thought 2015 could have been the real start of something special for Parra. But now, with no Hayne, I won’t be willing that Round 1 kick off to arrive as quickly as I might have in the past. There’s plenty of fans of other teams that will miss Hayne too and as much has been posted in blogs anywhere you care to try and find them. The of course there SBW and Sam Burgess who have also pulled the pin on the NRL this year. That’s 3 of probably the top 5 players/personalities in the game departing at once (Inglis and Thurston the other 2), and none of them doing so because they are retiring or injured etc. They’ve simply decided the time is now to move on and try something else.

The loss of Hayne to the NRL will be felt beyond the Eels fortunes on the field in 2015. NSW Origin hopes have taken a hit, Peter Wynn’s sales of Parra jersey’s with the #1 on it will take a hit, The SMH and Daily Tele won’t be able to rely on a Hayne Plane double page story to help generate interest on their papers anymore.

No sport or team can lose 3 of its top 5 faces and performers in 1 hit and expect things to just keep ticking along. The NRL should be concerned no doubt about it. They’re going to need something or someone to come along real soon to get things back on track IMO.

    • The main drawcard for the A-league is the fact that we are in Asia. The market within these countries is the envy of the world at the moment. Their leagues already benefit from their huge revenue generating organisations, it wont take much to sign a few quality players before they all start flowing in. the money is crazy.

I think once that occurs over the next 10-15 years, the A-league will reap the rewards. Best place to live in the region, and has quality infrastructure and fans ( that can be on par with europe )

  • I dunno about that. IMO Hayne is about as close to a once in a generation player as you'll find. Not just a player, he was also an Entertainer. Thurston can pick opposition teams apart but he doesn't have the explosive pace and power Hayne has. Hayne can barge over 3 and 4 derenders to score a try like Sam Burgess can, but Burgess never threw 20 metre cut out passes left or right to put his outside backs over like Hayne did. Sonny Bill had the explosive power and ability to put his teammates away like Hayne has, but I never say SBW kick a 40/20 liek Hayne did in the past or boot the ball 60 metres downfield when his team needed it...

He's basically got every ability you can name in one package. If you say there's some good ones in the crops coming through now, I'll be interested to see how they pan out and if they're mentioned in the same breath as Hayne in a decade from now. I hope you're right of course, I want to see that premiership trophy at Parramatta soon.

    • Agree EE hayne is exceptional in every dept. I'm sure one day another hayne will play in the NRL but I don't expect to see it in my lifetime.

  • I agree. The Socceroos recent performances and rankings are fading from the 06 and 10 WCs. The crappy rule changes and indescrepancies in the NRL of late are hurting.

  • lol B&G Gallop was a superleague Lawyer with no background in sports at all, a Yawnion fan who got the gig after doing such a good job for his master's in the super league war.   He paid them back in spades for undervaluing the rights for a decade.  The game was broke before the last TV deal.

Hell of a job lololololol, funniest thing i have heard in ages.
