Should Clubs That Cheat Be Referred For Police Charges

Looking through some of the all star teams, like Broncos, Roosters, Melbourne, Cronulla etc and the way it appears they have unlimited Salary Cap space, and I'm sick of it. I'm now wondering if those that are caught cheating, including persons and clubs,  be refered to the Police for real charges to be laid for Fraud - Or Obtain Benefit By Deception offences. Take it a step further even the crap about Cronk this week not playing etc, coaches, Doctors, Players all openly telling lies to the public about the nature of the injury, to gain an advantage or benefit, that is clear Fraud and a Benefit by Deception offence under law, not just the NRL. The Roosters benefitted by deceiving everyone. Punters were perhaps deceived out of their hard earned money etc. With the amount of betting dollars now being pumped into the sport, the clubs and players putting their hands out to get their share, then why shouldn't they have to abide by societies laws as well. The horse racing industry have to and police charge trainers and jockeys etc with fraud and deception offences at times. I'm wondering if it's time to put them before a magistrate.

  • I see no real issue with teams telling anybody about players injuries whether it be true or false to gain an advantage . The only people it hurts are their opposition and the gambling agencies . The fans that make bets based on this information only have themselves to blame . That’s why it’s called a gamble .

The only case I’d see here to answer would be if a Roosters insider or player made bets using the knowledge which is possible . They’re the only ones that should be investigated , not the club itself .

    • Agree
  • mate you are drawing a long bow here .  the clubs you named  would be salary cap compliant . there ability to assemble a dream team comes via the clubs having wealthy backers.and seemingly unlimited t.p,a`s

until the nrl puts a cap on t.p.a`s this will continue 4or 5 clubs share the premiership year in year out .

    • That's fine Nudger, I'm not saying refer those teams , I'm saying if they are caught cheating the cap. Perhaps a stint behind bars would all of sudden stop some cap cheating, or at very least put some integrity back into the game. Wiz it does hurt more then the gambling agencies and the other club they are playing against, it hurts the integrity of the game, puts normal mums and dads off the game, they don't buy merchandise, they don't attend games. I'm not a punter but people are invested emotionally in the result as well as some that bet money. It goes right on down to just the tea room tipping comp. if people feel deceived they usually don't came back for a second helping. And I'm not confident that clubs and teams are not rorting the fans. Fans are being treated as Mugs, invest your emotions , buy the merchandise, buy our bull shit lies, let your child play the sport but don't expect us (clubs, players) to tell you the truth or abide by an equalising salary cap.

      • Mate I’m not sure whether you’re talking about The Roosters playing possum over Cronks injury or clubs cheating the cap ?

Cronks injury , I have no dramas with the Rorters giving everyone a bum steer , clubs rorting the cap , yes I agree , guys like Peter O Sullivan who orchestrated the Storm rort and then was a protected species as soon as he joined The Roosters ( onky to go there and do the same thing ) yes should face criminal charges , just like the guys at our club did .

    • Capping TPAs isn’t the answer mate , nor would you get it past the RLPA. The answer is publishing them . You publish them , it will police itself .

Players cant even argue against the publishing of TPAs if these TPAs are above board . Surely they can see that it’s in their advantage , it’s pretty much going to help players gain further TPAs . Players that don’t have any will then have the luxury of potential sponsors seeing they can approach player x as he doesn’t have a TPA , it’ll also give potential sponsors to see how much a players TPA value is . It’s really a win / win , that is of course if the TPA system and players and clubs are being honest .

As for how it will police itself , a few things of note will be , clubs that are heavily subsidised with TPAs will lose some face when they’re winning games all year , they will hardly be celebrated as true champions will they , so they’ll be forced to reduce their TPAs , and players who have TPAs financed by “ friends of the club “ like Inglis’s Aboriginal tax payer funded TPA issued by an Ex Rabbits director will have more scrutiny over it , I mean , do you really think GI would’ve accepted taking money from an organisation set up to help sick indigenous people if he knew his fellow indigenous would find out about it ?   And even if the low life did take the money they’d at least have to add him to their website along side the other ambassadors ( who were doing it for free mind you ) and he’d have to actually do something for his money .

Craig Wings TPA with the Real Estate agents the Roosters lined him up with would’ve forced Craig to be out in his spare time driving sales for them ( which is why it fell through in the end because he wasn’t doing anything for them and he pissed off to The Rabbits )

publishig TPAs would fix this whole issue of uneven teams and at the same time it would take away the players that are doing the wrong things ability to play dumb should they get caught out .  Cam Smith , GI and Slater wouldn’t have been able to use the “ I had no idea where the money comes from “ defence if it was in the Daily Telegraph that they received a yearly sum from the the clubs caterers .

      • Outstanding post Wiz. Spot on and just to add to it if a company fails to come through with a TPA it will be bad publicity for the company in question making it less likely TPAs fall through at all . Once again a win for the players. I can’t understand how there’s no transparency the noises bemoaning the status quo are becoming too loud.

  • There's no need for teams to specify injuries beforehand as the injury could be targeted. The player's welfare comes first

Parramatta should be worrying about their own backyard before anything. Our rampant culture is costing us sponsorship and tpa's.

    • That's not a bad point chief but if the players welfare comes first then he doesn't go out onto the paddock with a 15cm Broken Scapula.

    • Yep Parra should be worrying about their own backyard first, but surely someone must be taking care of the game, it's integrity, the fans and future fans.
