Shane Richardson will depart his post as head of game strategy and development at the NRL to return to South Sydney. Less than a year after resigning from the Rabbitohs to join the NRL, Richardson has confirmed he will shift back to the club in the newly created role of general manager.

“I really enjoyed the experience of working at NRL headquarters but this new role – and its direct involvement with the players and the game – is what I want to do next in life,” he said in a NRL statement. “I am looking forward to moving from a strategic role back to the coal face.”

In his short time with the NRL, Richardson was responsible for drafting the game’s elite pathway blueprint, which was released in December. While it was endorsed by the ARL Commission (ARLC), the move to shift the current NSW and QLD Cups to a Platinum League, which would potentially merge a number of NRL clubs at a second-tier level, was slammed by the NSW Rugby League.

Richardson was forced to defend the move at the time. However, ARLC chairman John Grant says it is the success of the blueprint which allows Richardson to move back to the Rabbitohs. “He has completed the strategy and has been offered a long-term role at Souths so this is the logical time to make the change,” he said in the statement.

“His experience at the NRL has given him a unique insight into the game that he did not have before and he leaves on the best of terms.”

Richardson’s role at the Rabbitohs will include overseeing player retention, recruitment, pathways and operations. “Shane is arguably the most-experienced football brain in the country,” Rabbitohs CEO John Lee said in a club statement.

“He has a wonderful understanding of the football side of the business and a deep appreciation of what our club stands for, having been part of the organisation for over a decade.” The transition is expected to take place in the next 60 days.

  • Quite frankly the bloke should never have got the job after the Burgess, Sutton coverup.

His proposal was downright pathetic and the NRL are moving him on to distance themselves from it.

  • The pies must be better at Redfern....
  • Bugger

Bet they make a play for Hayne

Here is convincing proof of this claim

    • SHIT Col forgot to take the red pill this morning.

      SOMEONE CALL 000 !!!!!!!
    • lol hilarious Col.

  • Brissyeel you are probably right. I have a huge issue with Greenburg...he seems to have been 'fast-tracked' for this job, and yet he was with Canterbury for a short time; and he proceeded over the Baba issue which was swept under the bulldog carpet.

  • lol, big Richo got a real job and it obviously very quickly became apparent that he was waaaaaaay out of his depth. He wouldn't be leaving after less than a year for any other reason.

Back to South Sydney to act as Rusty's lap dog.

I reckon this bloke is easily the biggest myth in Rugby League.

    • A bigger myth than Coach Ricky? WOW!!

  • Both Richardson and Greenberg have covered up things at their club and awarded well paid positions in League HQ. Must mean Fitzy or Spags are due a position there to replace Richardson.

  • Every record is only ever set so someone else can break it fishy.

Shows the NRL is progressing. lol

I wrote a novel once titled - "The Age of Myths and Legends - A History of the NRL"
