Sean Russell

For all the positives around the development of individuals and the team this year .. if this bloke plays more than about 3 games for us next year it will be another long season .
Not a first grader , makes the same poor reads every week in defence , doesn't know he has a Ferrari outside him and can't even do his simple jobs well. He should be a stop gap player at best not a week to week regular.
He has no idea how to execute the basic parts of the game let alone take half chances . Very very average player .

    • Our left edge has been our weakness since Opicic left sean and fox have a good understanding yes his catch pass needs work.

Id imagine the stats back me up and right side is weaker

      • This is trys conceeded chart available on NRL try location analysis website.  Most sides attack best on their left so right defence is usually the worse.  Our left side defence is amongst better percentages for tries conceeded

      • Offside here some stats

Right side attack for eels is better as Moses plays on right and we kick towards Lomax 90% of the time.13669554461?profile=RESIZE_930x

        • What I find most interesting about this table is the top clubs attack through the middle more.

Ive been banging on for years about the need to attack through the middle third as it shortens the defense giving you room on the outside.

          Where's Canberra though ?

  • Well tonight shut you up, I think Ryles is making him a better player.

    • He's having a great season, and that try was pretty sensational. Doubt he would have been able to do that a year or so ago.

    • Agree Tin head.

  • Well Done Sean! The right coaching makes a huge difference,  looks like Jason has injected some smarts and self belief into this young eel.

  • For Russell to be a full time starting centre, it feels like that performance last night really needs to be his week to week, not an outlier?

Through no fault of his own, he lacks some of the natural ability of other centres, so the gap between his good & bad games needs to be minimal, imo.

He's improving like many of these guys & JR’s clearly shown confidence in him which was repaid last night.

He is great defensively, seems popular amongst the team & clearly works hard on his game.

But, tonight was a step up in attack for him. Often this season he's broken down space & opportunity by a lack of positioning, timing or poor passing. Which has left a lot of points on the field.

If he can play near enough to last night more consistently, he will shut many of us up & couldn’t be happier if he did.

But we need more than one great game. Let’s hope he’s another who flourishes with game time in one position, within a far superior defensive system, with one combination & helpful voice (JAC) and in first grade, which he hasn’t had until now.

Just opinion, stoked for him to play so well last night & shut myself up, and especially for owning a real doodle like Staggs.

    • Sometimes the solutions are within NOS, time will tell - hopefully Sean gets some consistency on his game.
