It was better than a BA stunned mullet stating that they didn't front load their effort enough. I thought it was interesting how Ryles knew the stats off the top of his head around missed tackles split by half. You'd imagine all the training work has been focused on the second half performance, rather than the first half.
It's good to see that Ryles takes the presser as a time to open up and give us some analysis and breakdown on the whole process.
BA always felt highly defensive in pressers and it led him to not really give anything away and just use the same few phrases over and over. I have no doubt he had his reasons as much of his coaching effort was based around having a seige mentality (him and the players against the world) but from a fans perspective this Ryles approach is so much more engaging.
Ryles was introspective without giving much away. It was nice to see. Obviously it's easy to be open when there's no pressure on you...but I hope this is the start of a new communication style that Ryles sticks with even when the going gets tough.
I get there's a lot of disappointment and frustration on this forum. Ryles seems to be on the right track on where the team fell short. Definitely the contact needs to be a lot better to slow down the play. Just wish we had a couple alpha males to provide some sting in defence. Junior isn't one and unfortunately we let RCG go. That's what Liam Martin, Sorensen and Leota does so well for the Panthers. Time will tell whether Ryles and Sam Moa are able to stiffen up the defence.
What little attack we had yesterday, needs to improve. Would like to see Volkman and DB kick with purpose when in opposition half. Forgo a little distance so every kick is contestable, bringing Lomax into the contest.
Good post.
My biggest disappointment is the unprepared nature of the side.Ryles knew what was coming but the team looked like the deer in the headlights.
I mentioned this about the pre season hit outs what I saw there was in no way an ideal way to prepare for Melbourne rd1.The answer mostly was met with was it got brushed for the most part.
I fear for Ryles because in the middle of the park and on the edge I don't think we have any answers within this roster we have now.
Have to remember this was v the red hot storm who will cut most teams to shreds. Let's see how this week looks v tigers
Great presser by Ryles, open and authentic communication is a refreshing change compared with whatever was dished up by BA.
Said that there was an 'incident' with Moses, but never elaborated on it. Obviously referring to the foot injury, but would have been nice to say how it happened.
Ryles I think made eels fans feel a little better here and did what Brad Arthur never could do which was make a little sense .
3 months is enough to see if he has something as a coach , any form of improvement will do .
Agree Fong, glad we don't have to subject ourselves to them dopey responses from the previous coach - I'm expecting a different performance this week, might be too early for a huge spray from Jason' - a coach can only do that a few times a year.
Imagine if the club's two bit board made a very crucial tweak like sacking Mark O'Neill and installing Brian Smith as HOF ?
