Ryles Winning with a $6 Million Roster

Jason Ryles is doing a phenomenal job at the helm of the Eels — and when you break it down, he’s doing it with a roster that’s worth just $6 million out of an $11.5 million salary cap.

That’s nearly half the value of many of our opponents.

Here’s a rough breakdown of the current squad he's working with

  • Iongi – $450k

  • Addo-Carr – $450k

  • Penasini – $550k

  • Russell – $280k

  • Lomax – $600k

  • Papalii – $180k

  • (Footy Dean) – $200k

  • Junior Paulo – $850k

  • Ryley  – $170k

  •  Williams – $460k

  • Kautoga – $200k

  • Tuilagi – $375k

  • Hopgood – $400k

  • Walker – $400k

  • Doorey – $300k

  • Lussick – $300k

  • Guymer – $300k

That’s approximately $6 million – and that might even be generous in a few cases.

Yet despite being undermanned on paper, Ryles' Eels have not only held their own, they've beaten the Dragons, Titans, Tigers, Manly, and Newcastle. They’ve also gone down narrowly to quality sides like the Sharks, Dolphins, Bulldogs, and Panthers — all in the last 10 rounds as the team adapts to Ryles' systems.

It’s clear: the coaching staff Ryles has assembled is doing a good job. With a full-strength roster and the cap space to build the squad he truly wants, look out. Parramatta is in seriously good hands.

Also, if we can get jag a win against the Dragons this Saturday then another 2 points with the bye up next,   we'll have a host of players coming back from injury and suspension including

Moses, Sam Tuivaiti,  Moretti, Bailey Simonsson, Ritchie penasini, Ryley Smith most of them due back after the bye.

A run for the 8 is not out of the question

      • Go back to the blog re announcement of Jack Williams signing with us. I think it's fair to say the majority were sceptical at best. Moving ahead to now and people are saying we should replicate him going forward.
Same goes for the comments from the opening month of the competition re Iongi, people have completely changed their tune all in the space of a few months. A bit of foresight is needed, Ryles knows what he is doing.

        • Yes Adam and I said it at the time, they didn't know what we were getting.I watched him closely at Cronulla and could not believe they let him go. He was an outstanding signing and personally I was a bit disappointed in his first few games (injury during preseason) but he hasn't let me down, I even suggested to a good mate I think he will make a better edge than a middle. Seems he can handle both at the same time now.

        • URGENT ATHLETICISM every player we recruit should have this component.

  • Well just in a few months our defence has improved out of sight, we slide a lot better in defence and we don't have players running out of the line, our attack has improved a lot, for the players we had on the weekend to score 36 was very impressive, it's a long year but with players coming back from injury we should go up another gear. Ryles is doing a great job, and you can see that in our lower grades, where we are in the top 4 in flegg and cup.

  • Loved what he said or close to it, when you put on that jersey & have that badge on your chest. You need to step up & play your best for that game. He has them all believing in themselves. He knows he heading in the right direction, people are not talking about the eels & how good they are playing.

  • I understand that you have guesstimated the amounts but in reality and for this season most of these would be getting more as we are obliged to spend 95% of the cap.

    • Yes I understand that but with the amount of injuries we have atm, and having Lane, Matterson, Cartwright and Ofehengaue who are either not available or have left, these players still account for a large chunk of our cap.

    • crrect as Paulo is on 950 k not 850.

  • Now if Elements of Management, in particular whomever is negotiating and closing contracts of real talented players could be improved.

Perhaps we could move the club to be competitive on the ladder, and give Ryles real talent / skill and pace to be better then other teams.

  • Ok a lot of people believe whole heartedly  that we have improved, that we are ahead of schedule, the green shoots are sprouting so to speak. I wonder at what point do we agree that running bottom of the ladder is a problem. 6months time, start of next season, the season after ie 2 years , 3 years from now.

My thoughts that i just can't shake is we can't sign real in demand talent when other clubs compete, this leaves us to identify future potential , that other clubs don't see in the hope of jagging a number of good players at the same time to win a premiership. This method i feel is just gambling to the extreme.

We may have fast exciting systems, but without the polished skilled players. It Still dosnt get us where we need to be.
