Ryan Matterson's deal with Gold Coast falls through

Parramatta Eels forward Ryan Matterson had a deal in place with the Gold Coast Titans for a move there, however the deal has now reportedly fallen through. Details as to why the deal fell through are not available. It means the 189 NRL game veteran will remain at Parramatta for 2026 on a salary reportedly worth $700k.

The fact a team was interested shocked me but it is disappointing as we know Matterson will not feature in 2026, even if he did it would be in a very minimal role as Ryles moves towards the likes of Moretti, Tuivaiti, Guymer and Talagi as future middles.

  • Oh well. How Parra uses Matterson will be dependent on where he wants his career to go. If he is happy to retire after this season, then he will be playing park footy in 2026. If he wants to continue playing NRL, then he will put in for a big season. It's up to him, and I'm sure Ryles won't be phased either way.

    • Nah he wont play park footy. Money is his incentive.

      • Jinx

    • Matto is not playing park footy. Not gonna risk damaging those looks for no money. He will continue posting a billions videos on instagram on his diet, gym, daily life, etc. He got engaged and probably post 5 things a day about it since it happened 2 weeks ago.

      • I posted a couple of weeks ago that Catto's degree was Bachelor of Gay Instagram....he must've read it and decided he needed a beard. ...Engagement Time!

  • Send the bloke to the London Broncos, surely they need a bench forward.

  • They say GC didn’t have the funds so why bother expressing interest.

There’s definitely a side story to this and I think it will be around how much Parra were willing to kick in for Matto to leave.

350,400,500 god only knows but Matto is here to stay whoop whoop.27 is our year and I’ve said this before I’m just looking for development in juniors this year the ones in the top 30 making steps up and just getting JRs system with and without the ball seeing it improve.

If I'm honest I don't know why the club just don't buy Matto out and just stop wasting our time and promote another junior to NSW cup as thres no future here for him.

    • Coryn it is a big year for the club for players like Talagi, Funa-Iuta and more to get a season under their belt and others to get more experience. My footy doesn't know much footy and even says 2027 will be the year ahahahaha.

As for buying him out it still comes off the cap i guess. I see what you mean as he would be taking up a spot in Cup though.

  • It just goes to show the morons who did his contract should have been turfed; compare him to the likes of many others and the recruitment group are pathetic for this. Like DB paid on potential

    • Mitchy, you are being unfair, those morons as you referred to them were between a rock and a hard place. Matto had virtually signed to go with Bennett at the Dolphins, the hard place is we had just lost 3 players because we could not match the new salary demands.

"True but also at the same time you have to convince him to agree to it. All well and good saying "Get him to retire" when he has to agree to it too. We cannot force any player to retire. So therefore he has to agree to it in some capacity. He might…"

"There is always a solution Poppa; it seems we were played into paying too much $$$; lets be honest he had a decent 22 and 21; the money we signed him for and others is the issue. He is a second rower and I say again he was paid on potential. I get…"
