Reserves and Flegg Winless after 4 Rounds

A big part of Penrith's success over the past 4 years has been the ability to bring players up from lower grades in teams that were at or near the top in the lower grades. Whilst it's no secret Penrith have done well in developing their juniors, it's even more impressive that they have built a winning culture throughout the club.

Last week we had narrow losses to the Tigers/magpies in all 3 grades. All games were there to be won but the Tigers found a way to win in all grades.

Whilst there is little doubt that a quality pathways system is required to identify future talent, it's no guarantee of success. This begs the question of how coaches and mentors are identified as the right people to ensure that talent is realised and a winning culture is maintained throughout the entire club.
Our Flegg team is coached by Jordan Rankin and Cayless is our reserve grade coach. Neither have had success as coaches, albeit Rankin is still in early stages but was assistant coach for SG Ball last year.

My point here is the importance of ensuring  quality coaches are in place for our Harold Matthews, SG Ball, Flegg and Reserves teams. Each one should be building on what has been done previously and taking it to the next level. Are Rankin and Cayless the right people to do this? It would appear not based on performances so far this season.
Its still early days so let's hope they turn it around

  • Because the coaching is abysmal and recruiting is worse

  • Alfred you have raised some good points. I understand and someone can correct me that last yr's Matts and Ball coaches are still involved somewhere- think Ball is with Reggie's or Flegg? Not sure.
I also feel we have let kids go in key positions over the yrs and could maybe have kept some. There's a dummy half I'm sure who's with Canterbury now from Matts? Think he was capt.
I don't know how / why they seem to chop and change coaches in the juniors often. I watched Reggie's live last week and we had that game and Sanders played well but we didn't aim up in the last ten mins. We have some young players but wests do too.
We must lock key players in key positions- also no doubt the Reggie's / Flegg would be a little better if Penisini and Miller Stephen's were there as they both would've benefited a lot from a season in Flegg / Reserves.
I also know Penrith have kept similar coaching staff with their pathways kids for a while along with guys like Matt Cameron who's been elevated in roles over his time. I've always said we need someone like him who was Parra in our system.
We need Parra people in key roles and not people who are for a year or so and nick off. Junior coaches who know the kids coming up with an experienced head who can lead.

    • Spot on Mitchy! Having great juniors won't guarantee success without the right coaches and mentors. That's where I think Penrith have got it right in the last 5 years. They've always had a good junior base but now they've got the right people in place to bring them through

  • I am so sick of hearing about penriths juniors..

guess what, they have had that junior base for over 60years and its only in the last 4 years they have dominated.

they are just lucky they are going through a golden generation. It will pass, their reign will end...

    • That's the point I'm making Fiddy. Both clubs have always had good juniors but I think Penrith has got it right with coaches and mentors in lower grades and we haven't

    • Exactly , they're just in a lucky purple patch and Gus was fortunate enough to have been sacked within close enough proximity to be able to cash in for those silly enough to credit him for it. Let's not forget he sacked Cleary and has failed miserably everywhere else he's been in recent times . Gould's a myth in the Ricky Stuart mould.

Cleary has always been a quality coach , and he just happened to be at Penrith when a great crop came through.  But he also was smart enough to recruit a player like Api that knew how to win and show the young guys what it takes , that was the missing peice of the puzzle and exactly the type of player we are missing to change our squad from soft pretenders to winners  . The difference between us and them isn't talent , it's attitude and desire. Cleary vs Moses on the big stage is like comparing Andrew John's to Chris Sambow. Ditto Luai vs Brown. Luai has mongrel and competitiveness in spades which will beat Browns natural ability and flair everytime,  he's a cunt , but cunts usually come out on top in competition sports because their ego is driven to win , wheras Browns ego is all show off the paddock.

      • Are you honestly comparing Moses to Chris Sandow? What in the feck are you drinking tonight because I'm straight up to Dan Murphy's to get some. Moses has been the second best halfback in the comp for the past 4 years in pretty much everyone's opinion who is being fair dinkum. If he plays for Penrith and Cleary for Parra he is probably the best halfback in that period.

        • Yeah Moses achieved more in year 1 than Sandow did in 4. Or his whole career.

  • The coaching at Parra is abysmal.  Cayless has never been a winner and has had many opportunities at coaching and has failed everytime.   Rankin too is a journey man in failed systems so how do we expect to do well when the coaching is sub par

  • Parramatta seem to not have the ability to hold on to the good players. For example there are 2 players that will play origin this year that are at other clubs. 1 player never even played junior reps. Got knocked back by every coach. Penrith have always had good juniors and probably always will. The big difference is they recruit within and don't pay big money bringing players into their system.
