Referees - Agenda or Incompetence?

I'll put my hand up and admit to being at my wits end. At the moment I have no idea what these blokes will dish out but the one thing I can be certain about is that Parra will not be the benefactors of any "significant" refereeing decisions.I'm going to qualify something first so that this will not come across as a blog that is making excuses for poor play. The referees do not miss tackles. The referees do not push passes or drop footballs. A football team has control of that aspect. However, football teams can also be the benefactors of crucial calls that decide momentum flow or even the actual result. I struggle to think of moments when we are the benefactors of such crucial decisions.I've written a tongue in cheek blog in the past about the referees play book, but I've moved well beyond being able to make light of their ineptitude. I'm concerned about the way that our club is viewed and handled by the whistle blowers. This year I've witnessed decisions that range from head scratching to infuriating. The problem is, it's not just at NRL level. Forty20 does a great job of factually describing everything from junior reps to NYC and Wenty. His calls have referenced the impact of refereeing in these matches, especially a couple of the junior rep finals and some NYC games. Perhaps he and Ham could elaborate on this. The more that a team slides down the ladder, the more that their confidence drops. We are not executing well enough to overcome poor refereeing decisions. Every team has to be resilient enough to cope with a bad call or two in a game, but for Parra it is relentless and it must be frustrating. If it's impacting someone like me the way that it is, and I consider myself to be reasonably well measured in my thoughts, I can imagine the impact that it must have on the players.Unfortunately, a club is limited in the way it can respond to officiating. I know it as fact that Archer has already had to concede to our club that crucial errors have been made this year.Well, Mr Archer, let me add another. Let's ignore all of the forward passes that fans and commentators were able to see. The decision to not penalise the Warriors for a strip in front of the posts yesterday was wrong and inexcusable. In spite of all of Parramatta's errors, that refereeing "blunder" was the deciding factor in the game. Such a change in possession would be penalised 99 times out of 100. No matter how many times you concede that your officials have made an error, nothing seems to change. The buck stops with you Mr Archer. Your officials are making far too many dubious calls and the club and the fans deserve answers. Here's my previous flippant blog on referee tip sheets:http://www.1eyedeel.com/forum/topics/plays-from-the-referees-tip-sheets?xg_source=activity

  • Absolutely pure Incompetence in my view. As you mentioned many people here keep saying we should be good enough to overcome these poor decisions. Well when we have a roster like the roosters ill agree with them but atm we have to scrap for any kind of advantage so these poor refs calls hurt us and hurt us badly.

  • Incompetence as well as no balls. They havnt got the balls to blow penalties when the game is on the line with very little time remaining. The strip, whole team off side couple of occasions in the dying moments as the Wariors were absolutely spent, but they just don't have the balls to call it the cowards

    • As much as you can examine the penalties your own team gives away, it's the penalties that your team doesn't receive that is also damning. In addition to straight offside, how many times did we run from dummy half and catch the Warriors offside? The look of disbelief on the faces of Peats and others told the story.
    • Watching Sterlo show on Ch 9 and they said Mannah loosing ball when stripped. Oh hang on, last week a Storm player lost ball and ended up in Sandows arm. Result, penalty against Parra and think they scored try from this. Parra strip, Warriors loose carry, gee isn't consistency great!

  • 100% agree I would love to see some statistics on refereeing against us and compared with other teams I believe you will find a huge difference I am sure someone would do the stats on officiating as would aid in betting on games.

    • Even penalty counts don't tell the whole story. The where and when are crucial. Some teams get first tackle penalties when attacking in the 20. That's like being given one extra tackle.and it can even stop momentum. Other teams receive 4th and 5th tackle penalties that are like granting repeat sets. Teams receive penalties with minimal time on the clock at the end of a half or with the game out of reach. The stats show a relatively balanced penalty count but the advantage is another matter.
  • Parramatta is not the only club to suffer. Incompetence is rife in the ranks of referees, but they also appear to have an agenda. There are a few other clubs suffering as well. If you criticize the referees, you will pay the penalty. Calling them Voldemorts has caused a few big problems for the Dogs.

    • Our club has not publicly criticised. We did not blow up yesterday on field or off. We are making our dissatisfaction known through appropriate channels but nothing changes.
  • Well written Sir.

Did anyone notice the fact that not only was the ball stripped and not penalized but they then received 7 TACKLES before converting the field gold.

    Explain that!

    • Please not another 7 tackle incident? Cue Greg Hartley
