  • Vave definitely needs more minutes

    • He does.

The fact he played so few in this game when he was incredibly solid - as he was last week - does genuinely baffle me.

    • Thanks again Ricky, yeah I think Matagi has been very disappointing
  • Thanks Ricky

Tackling seems to be an issue.

I'd be interested in knowing who was 'tackling' when offloads were made. Ie in effective tackles
    • Ineffective tackles:

      Norman - 3
      Brown - 3
      K. Pritchard - 2
      Ma'u - 2
      Matagi - 1
      Jennings -
      Hoffman - 1
      Mannah - 1
      F. Pritchard - 1
      Vave - 1
      Gutherson - 0
      Radradra - 0
      Takairangi - 0
      Scott - 0
      French - 0
      Alvaro - 0
      Gower - 0

    • Do we have a timeframe on when Matagi missed his tackles?
  • Can you tell me when exactly do you record an ineffective tackle?
    • Exactly as you said.

An ineffective tackle is when you attempt to make a tackle but in the process, you allow the attacking player to offload the ball.
That counts as an ineffective tackle as the player/s were unable to get the player to the ground or to wrap him up.

  • Thanks Ricky. Norms misses A lot of tackles again. Needs to improve there as well.
Matagi's, that's A few too many missed there too. Says it all, overall 35 to their 19 is not what we have to expect from our last year side. Maybe we just focus on defensive drills next week :(
Be interesting to see the breakdown of missed tackles first and second halves, or would that be irrelevant considering who took the field?

We sorely miss Scotts '16 steely leadership but think we showed signs of our backs to the wall steely coming back in the second half. So that's nothing but good to see.
Brown helped and so did Frank good run meters as well.
    Alvaro another solid job.
Vave looking the goods as well. Be interesting to see how he goes with more time (I'd say) next week.

Shame Jennings had his blinkers on yesterday when he stuffed up not getting it away. Thought he had a good game otherwise and the stats show that.

    .
Thought French and Taka missed a couple, guess I was wrong. Taka was getting better assistance out there this week I thought, so that's a big plus. Taka still found himself out a little in no mans land in D but overall it was an improvement by all out that side I thought.

Next week we must go on with what we showed in the second half.
    • Norman was caught out of position a few times and so that contributed to some bad misses but he's generally much better in defence than that.
Matagi in the middle missing those 6 tackles is more concerning for me. It's actually quite worrying.

I think can break that down, just let me check and I'll reply in a new comment.

Scott is, unfortunately, regressing somewhat and it's a shame.
Brown is good, runs aggressively, but he still has these dumb offloads in him and one of them led to a try for the Raiders.
Vave is, IMO, our most damaging forward right now and the meterage he is making per run illustrates that.

Taka was better in defence because the entire side, for the most part, covered better, defended better and supported each other better.
Taka has never been a bad defender, quite the opposite. And yes, that's the key, we have to continue that 2nd half form.
