Remember the season after we lost Semi? We came dead bloody last. If BA falls out of the top 8 he is toast.
The answer to not having those big cap hits long term is short contracts.

We didn't finish last because we lost Semi. 2018 was a confluence of a number of different forces.

One of the factors being that we lost the best winger in the comp and tried to replace him with a reserve grader in George Jennings. It went just about as well as you would predict. Terribly.
This just illustrates the point that you can't replace rep quality players with reserve graders and expect the same outcome.
Replacing RCG with a reserve grader will have the same outcome. You need a like for like replacement. You can't just WISH that one of the juniors or reserve graders will turn rep quality. It doesn't work that way.
Would you run your business with just apprentices ? You need quality experienced tradesman. We haven't had fuck all tradesmen in any of the key positions for the current players in said positions to learn off . No Hooker , no 5/8 , No halfback , RCG is the first real big bopper our young bucks can take something from. Yes they'll have next year , but unless they're exceptional talents it's not enough. Anyone that's played grade as a young bloke knows who showed them the ropes. It was always the older blokes you absorbed off. .

We still have Junior, Nathan Brown, Papa & Ryan Matterson. Our forward pack is not lacking for toughness, experience or leadership.
"The NRL has become a product to sell to the highest bidder and to generate as much income as possible. It's no longer a sporting spectacle where the best skills are on display. Cricket has done that for years now with T20, and to be honest that has…"
"Only issue is you might want to sign a player long term, they need to agree. Petrus could very well want to play for PNG eventually but also when it came to schoolboys he chose Australia over PNG. Not sure if that means anything."
"Nup reckon it makes it easier for him with Mary's link. He'll go.
the guy will make easily $2M pa including mega TPAs. Any dad would be happy to ok that.

"Agreed. The players need to know what the plans are for them, and why they are set in place like that. They need to know what KPIs they need to hit in order to progress to the next level. This way the guys in lower grades will know that they are not…"

He is good yes. I would take him.
You need a mix of established stars and promising juniors.
AFB is an established dominant forward.
Hollis/Rodwell/Greig/Kaufusi can still be bench forwards doing their apprenticeship even if we buy AFB.
So how many more years are you prepared to wait for that to be a possability based on an if? RCG is proven, these others are not.

How sad.
There's a fair resume amongst their pack. Not to mention they've done their apprenticeship under a fair bunch of pommy brothers.
