Ranking NRL Organisations/Clubs

I recently did a video about ranking NRL Organisations/Clubs from Worst to Best. This video was originally done by a Gold Coast supporter on Youtube by the name of BKR Sport. In his video, he ranked us as the worst club in the NRL, behind the Wests Tigers and St. George. In this video I rank all the teams but at 29:28 on the video is when I talk about Parramatta. BKR Sport's reasoning for putting us last was because of the premiership drought. He also ranked South Sydney in the "just getting by" category even though they are co-owned by James Packer and an IT Billionaire. The link for the video is down below.

  • If you're going to rank an entire organisation, then in my opinion your off-field set up is more important than your on-field set up.

The Tigers have been dysfunctional both on and off the field for a decade, have gone through 9 coaches and collected back to back wooden spoons. There are indications things are on the up with the removal of their old board but there's a long way to go for them.

    • BKR the daft git, he ranked as "couldn't organise a chook raffle" but put Wests Tigers, St. George and the Gold Coast higher.

  • Imagine getting criticised by a Gold Coast supporter? Titans are probably the most irrelevant club in the game.

    • ^this

    • At least they had "HayneCam".  Nobody else did

  • So he ranked us worse than the Gold Coast who have never looked like winking a comp in any of their incarnations? Hmmm

    • BKR Sport to me is a perfect example of someone who got big on social media talking about rugby league but just because you have a big following it doesn't therefore translate into actual knowledge about the game or clubs. A lot of the people who follow him are under the age of 25.

  • Thanks for sharing Steel and really liked your analysis. Some really interesting points made and I agree with your assessment of Parra as a success overall.
You mentioned the golden era from 1975-1986 and it's a great point. Many see Parras golden era as 81-86 but plenty of legwork was done in the 2nd half of the 70s to achieve success in the 80s.
Whilst I do see us as one of the stronger clubs (particularly based on membership and finance), I question the CEO and Boards performance over the past 37 years. We have had 2 coaches serve 10 years each (20 years total) at the helm with nothing to show for it. I still can't believe we lost in 2001 bu Smith stayed on another 5 years after that. Arthur (arguably) did a great job leading us out of a very shitty period in the clubs history but he stopped being the right man for the job 5 years ago. Yes he coached us to a GF and many finals but were we ever a realistic chance of winning?
I still very much agree with your assessment of Parras success but I do believe that would have been further affirmed if the CEO/Board had responded quicker in replacing both Smith and Arthur with a "Jack Gibson" who could take us to the next level

    • The golden era started in 1975 when the club won their first ever trophy the pre season competition under Norm Provan. We only missed the finals once from 1975-1986 which were in 1980 and even that year we won the mid week competition. The coaching situation, it seems whenever the club has made a rash decision about the coach it backfires. I remember when Smith left, Taylor replaced him who I thought did a great job but then he was soon replaced by Hagan. Maybe the board at the time thought "Well he was the coach at Newcastle in 2001 and he masterminded our downfall so he must be good right??". 2007 was a good year under Hagan but by 2008 he was found out to be not so good. We then got Daniel Anderson in who did a great job in 2009 but then he was stabbed in the back and usurped by Kearney. The board must have thought "He was at Melbourne under Bellamy so he must be good right?". Kearney turned out to be one of the worst head coaches of the NRL era. At least under Arthur there has been some stability even though no premiership. We don't want to be a club like the Wests Tigers or New Zealand where we change head coaches like underpants.

      • In those days Fitzy made the calls all by himself. I asked him why he hired Hagan and as you say, he said he's a premiership winning coach etc. I told him I could have coached that Newcastle side to a premiership given the players they had, Fitzy didn't enjoy that comment at all.
Whether BA is the right man or not I do firmly believe that the club is finally set up correctly.  When BA leaves, the next coach doesn't have to knock down every thing and start all over again. This is what we had in the past hence the very lean period post Smith. It's what shitty clubs do when they're failing, they bring in a new Coach and expect miracles when it's not so much the Coach that makes a club strong and it's everything around the coach. The Coach's job is to win and that's it.
