Question on rules

I'm just wondering why more teams don't kick the ball for touch when awarded a 20 metre restart after the opposing side has kicked the ball dead. As I understand the rule the team tacking the place kick is entitled to do this and would receive the feed at the ensuing scrum. I realize for some this might be considered a high risk play, but with a 30- 40 metre kick it would certainly provide better field position. Defending sides are usually scrambling to get into position and the wingers are always up so why not? Worst case scenario forgo possession on the other side of the halfway.

  • Because its a low percentage play if the kick doesn't go out you loose the 7 tackle set if it goes out on the full its a penalty right in front. Good play when your behind and chasing the game.
  • High risk play, meaning no team nowadays are willing to do it. Only people that I can remember doing it is JT and Benji.
