Problems converting in the opposition 20

Hi all, my first post please be gentle!Anyone else been frustrated with how infrequently Hayne gets the ball when Parra is in the oppositions 20 metre zone?We should be scoring more points than we are. Apparently we are the top side for long range tries but we get knotted up too often when we're close in.I believe if Hayne got the ball one or two off the ruck at least twice in every set in the strike zone you'd be looking at a much higher conversion rate.If he gets good ball at first or second receiver he gets on the outside of his man nine times out of ten and with his set of skills you've got an opportunity for the short ball, the long ball or for him to take on the line himself.I'm all for Norman and Sandow to play their role but surely you want your best playmaker involved at these times and Hayne is our best playmaker.Cheers.

  • Agree mate, welcome and great first blog.

I have been pushing for jarryd to go to 5/8 for years to get his hands on  the ball more often in the oppositions 20m, Norman really struggles with options and is useless most of the time, and sandow isnt reliable in scoring opportunities.

Yes our options are poor in the opps 20m.

    • Thanks for the welcome, have lurked here at times over the last few weeks and enjoy the discussion i've read.
    • If we had've been allowed to grab Folau, we probably would've had Hayne at 5/8 and never have recruited Norman

  • And that's the thing with Hayne being our best playmaker, he's also our best runner of the ball as shown by the powerful display in the second half against the Sharks where he put his head down from 10 metres out and he palmed off a defender and pushed through 3 other defenders to just be held up.

With Hayne having the #1 on his back I'm more than happy for him to be getting the ball where he currently is as he can power through edge defenders easier than he would middle defenders. Until we get someone who has the running game of Hayne then I don't think he should be moved from fullback. If he goes into that first or second receiver in the opposition 20, as we've seen in our structure and other structures, that to get into the in-goal you need an elaborate sweep play set-up and the first and second receivers are there to keep the defence honest but their mindset is generally: Pass, kick, run. At the moment with his running game and confidence you want Hayne's mindset to be: Run, pass, kick. He can keep this mindset where he is currently getting the ball and if he sees something down a short side I'm sure he can override a call that the halves make because as you've pointed out he's our best playmaker and he's also the captain.

I do believe that eventually we will become a better scoring team when we're in the opposition 20 and for mine a lot of it comes down to team chemistry. On our flanks the only players that featured in our team last year were: Sandow, Morgan, Sio, Tonga (Rarely), and Semi for 7 games. So we have: Ma'u, Edwards, Gower, Pauli, Moeroa, and Hoppa. All playing together for the first time really and those aforementioned players have never played together on the flanks before this year and the only ones that have done so still had limited time together. Not only this, it wasn't until this year that we've had at least 1 centre that's been able to hold a position in the team for an entire year. So we've still got time to learn as a team so that we can get the right plays that play to our strengths and exploit the opposition's weaknesses.

On the team chemistry thing again, I believe that is why our right hand side attack is stronger than our left side attack this year. Sandow, Sio, and on occasion Morgan have played together since 2012 when Sandow came across from Souths so they have had that bit of chemistry, then you factor in Hoppa who is all class and it was always going to be strong; whereas on the other side Semi, Tonga/Morgan, and Norman had only the pre-season to work on their combination and that's why I believe we sometimes see our LHS attack fault a bit because they haven't quite worked out their combination and timing together. I also believe when you factor in the second-rowers they will make a huge difference, if we are able to keep a rotation of Ma'u, Moeroa, and Pauli on the edges next year then I believe that can only strengthen our flanks.

Just a bit of a side note on the experience of our backline I'd say this weekend has about 110 games of NRL experience with Morgan making up more than half of those games, add Sio to that list and it goes up to about 170 and both Sio and Morgan make up over 100 of those games. Willie Tonga by himself has played more games than our backline had on the weekend.

    • Yeah apparently stats bear this out with Hayne topping line breaks and line break assists, would be great if he could run onto his own balls. Wait. That sounded dirty!
    • Hi Ham a really top post. IMO u obviously have a comprehensive insight into the game.

  • BA has acknowledged several times now that some of the options taken on last tackle and inside the opp 20mt isn't ideal and he makes a point of this in some of his recent post match interviews. He also stresses that we are a young team still developing so you can bet that they are working hard to over come these short falls.

    "In BA we trust"

  • Can agree with that, although his running to the line and pass worked well against Sharks. One criticism is that it became a little too predictable. Sometimes he should just take on the line himself, the opposition might be so surprised that it results in a linebreak.

  • Yeah if only we could clone players haha. I think in 2011 and 2012 Hayne also led the LBA and TA categories too. I think he is leading both the LB and LBA categories this year because of his running game, he is able to suck more players in with his runs so he can get a short ball away and that constitutes as an LBA. I haven't seen the statistics but I think from 2011 and 2012 we'd see a decrease in Hayne's Try Assists and that is due to him focusing on his running rather than passing.

  • The problem is we set up for set plays but if the defence reads it and snuffs it out, or we simply stuff it up, nobody knows what to do and usually then the set turns out to be an absolute waste. If we can't score we need to get a repeat set, it's simple, but something we are quite bad at. I think Sandow has improved in this over the last couple of weeks but can still do better, but Norman really needs to work on his short kicking game.
