POPPA'S CORNER; Potential is something we need to qualify

FM made a good post about  that dreaded word "potential" ,

FM  it's true  we may have expectations that we keep describing as "potential" i.e. playing above their potential and us thinking they will go further.

Some of our forwards fit that mode I suspect.

Hautonga continues to confuse me, he is horribly lazy then all of a sudden he does something very good and you think "maybe he wasn't lazy" I can't judge him properly yet but that word potential does come into play. FM thinks we maybe a fair way from the top 8 just the same and I understand that judgement, because we are still positioned where we are at present.

Not so sure about being a long way off for top 8 though in terms of "wait for it" POTENTIAL.

Even if we don't achieve it, the teams we have lost to this year that are well entrenched in top 8 indicates we are not that far of the pace.

Joash is another interesting one, because his effort is high and so is his skill, but is he playing to his potential?

I suspect that there is not much there to come, Ideal back up for Iongi in our shadow team just the same. Some of these players that have been tried at other clubs and our own ones coming through still have the "potential" to be realised. We do have a strong tendency of over rating our juniors!

To this point a blend of experience maybe the way to go with our spending money and balancing our up and comer's.

I would like to see the monster from Melb (forward) and Cobbo  to give us an X factor and then some warhorses like Garner and Gagai. I think Gagai could be a very good edge forward off the bench. Not to mention the overall flexibility he would give...... nothing wrong with older players to give experience and that acknowledges we got rid of some that no longer fitted.

  • Realised is the word your looking for after POTENTIAL and that's the science behind coaching, development  and environment when it becomes realised then we can talk success.

Potential is a word used alot on how your described and mentioned talent it's upto firstly the player then the above mentioned for it to be realised.

I mean we see it on 1EEs members and posters potential but wheather it's realised or we see the same old after an amount of time is much the same.

    • I think I understand you....but would it not be fair to say UNREALISED means exactly that in context. I think we have to eat the pudding to say its "realised".

We certainly are a long way from success, even if we managed to make the eight this year we would be successful, but have we realised success? No the journey goes on untill we qualify success.....maybe success is different for some than others.

I did say in a post yesterday that the ride is a very enjoyable part of the trip.

NB I thought about what I just wrote and just winning a comp is not the success I would hold up and say we made it. Success to me would be an expected top 4 finisher every year and have the respect of the whole league as one of the most powerful clubs in the comp. Top 4 finishes on a regular basis gives competition wins.

      • Realised to me means there the finished product if I'm reading the thread right mate.

You mention Kautonga who I actually think is an unfinished product with some rough edges.

I get what your saying but again in my eyes to be realised as a team we'd have to know what the goal of the team is.So if making the 8 or just being competitive and missing was the goal then I'd agree it's realised.
