Please Explain!!

I am thinking of going to the Ken Thornett Medal night. The invitation says dress is formal. What does that mean in the context of Rugby League? Would my usual dress of long trousers, thongs, short sleeved shirt and white tie pass muster?

       How else do you wear them? But please see Punk Floyd`s  advice for the definitive wearing of thongs in the formal context.
