Plays from the referees tip sheets

I have opened this blog again because of the influence that poor refereeing is having at the start of this season. I'm fearing how close to reality this tongue in cheek blog is becoming.1. (insert poor performing team name) is not successful). They are ill disciplined and will break rules because this is the only way that they can win. Sin bin or penalise at your pleasure.2. (Insert high profile winning team)- is successful and well coached. They might push the limits but their coach is very good at keeping their players within the rules. They are unlikely to incur penalties. Do not take stern action against them, just tell them to watch what they are doing.3. If you are surprised by the tactics of (insert name of successful favoured club) remember who their coach is. His tactics would be well thought out and unlikely to break any rules.4. If you are prepared to rule against (insert name of favoured club) be prepared to come under close scrutiny for all games controlled against them. (There may be an investigation called for by the coach or perhaps you might learn how to follow the tip sheet in the NSW cup).5. If (insert star players name) wishes to question your decision please hear him out as he earned the right to dispute your decisions.6. If (insert certain captains' names) question your decision dismiss his approach with disdain and allow a quick tap to the opposition. That will keep him in his place.7. Consider how your decisions can impact the flow of the game. The where and when of penalties can provide momentum change in a game.8. There are opportunities to even up a penalty count with minimal impact. A penalty on the first or second tackle is ideal. A penalty when the team has already earned possession through a line dropout works well, a penalty with a few seconds left in the half or when the game is beyond reach can help the stats.9. If (insert favoured club name)- is being dominated by a lesser team a late in the tackle count penalty for hands on the ball is ideal because all defenders will put their hands on the ball. This rule is beautiful because like the old scrum penalties you can call them whichever way you want and they cannot be disputed.10. If (insert favoured team) and (insert favoured team) are playing each other it is in your best interest to let the players decide the match. If you make bad calls against either team you're on your own.

As much as this pains me to agree with him, "Gus" Gould had a perfect point from the Friday game when he said "come on touchy, you've got a flag, USE IT!"

Admittedly it was to do when Semi tried to do a barge over and score, live at the game even I COULD SEE Semi had gone into touch, but Gould's comment has a greater scope than JUST that moment, as I am sure he too is frustrated at the lack of ability and commitment from the match officials.

The FLAG BOYS are line officials .... the word that is key here is OFFICIALS .... they are there to be an extra set of eyes for the game referee(s) and need to have the guts to once again be so. If they see foul play, if they see a defensive player has interfered in the play the ball, an attacking player has dropped the ball, a defender has touched the ball as it goes over (the pass that Semi "put down" that did appear the ball's trajectory had altered when it went past the Canterbury defender) OR A DEFENDER IS CLEARLY OFFSIDE (again Friday's game)..... they NEED to open their mouths . Simple as that.

I've said my peace ..... I'll wait until I've had a few Canadian Club Dry's on Friday to allow my throat to comment some more!!

Still ... it could be worse ... we could have the touchie from that Queensland cup match who ruled that the ball was legally knocked in .... as you can see with the photo, the player was WELL out .... the touchies eyes never left the player (maybe he secretly liked the cut of his jib!!!)

"I think with the current speed of the game and the increasing amount of HIA's I really think having a 6 man bench which all 6 can be used during the game at the coaching discretion is the way to go. If the game was slower ( get rid of repeat sets)…"

I'm thinking that I should include a flag boys section. If you're ever at a game and you hear some lunatic yelling abuse and calling the touch judges flag boys, then you've found me!
