I did read an article about a week or two ago saying that the most likley outcome would be that the insurance company and the Eels will come to some sort of agreeement on the payout to share the costs.
Most importantly is that any money that the Eels have to pay will not be against the salary cap. The NRL has accepted that he has retired medically and none of his payout will be in the cap irrespective who pays Whatmough.
I haven't heard any reported news on this. Where was it reported?
I suspect Watmough was always going to have a hurdle to get over with the Insurance company, as to qualify the career ending injury has to be a new injury, NOT pre-existing. Watmough was playing with a torn PCL for 2 plus seasons prior to coming to Parra (no surgery undertaken, managed by physio). The alleged Watmough incident/injury/collision in February had to be a new injury, not a further injuring of an old injury (something very hard for a Doctor to determine in favour of Watmough).
As per a possible pay out from the club that will be determined by his contract. I suspect he will be forced to retire or be forced to play. If he can't play and club doctors stay he can't play then he would be in breach of his contract and the contract would become terminated.
The NRL accepting a career ending injury is NOT linked to the Insurance company. I suspect we could need to pay him some money but this will not be in the cap if the NRL accepted Watmough for injury retirement.
No you are correct BD, the NRL accepting that it is a career ending injury does not influence the Insurance Company but does mean that any money paid to Whatmough will not be included in the cap.
Not when I heard the Manly club refused to allow him to repair his knee the season prior to him starting with Parra. What it did show is how tough the guy was to play two and a half seasons with legiments torn in his knee - Ray Price would have been proud. In his prime Watmough was an elite of the elite.
Mac Phil did and a few others! I was underwhelmed by the signing and his performances.
Yes we have to still pay him but it doesn't go against the cap
