The Parramatta Eels have
reportedly sent a sensational
SOS call to retired halfback
Mitchell Pearce
The Eels are currently facing an
injury headache in the halves
with Mitchell Moses to miss the
next eight weeks after hurting
his foot.
That has left the club
scrambling, with Blaize Talagi
moving into the five-eighth role,
and usual number six Dylan
Brown moving into the number
seven.

Speaking on Triple M Radio,
journalist James Hooper said
the Eels have called Pearce
directly ahead of their Easter
Monday clash with the Wests
Tigers
"One of the big stories this week
was the injuries to some of the
star players in the game," Hooper
said on Triple M's Saturday
Scrum show
"The big one for the Parramatta
Eels was losing their halfback
Mitchell Moses to a busted foot
and he is going to be missing for
three months.

"Off the back of that, people
at the Eels have directly rang
Mitchell Pearce and just posed
the question - 'look, we have a
little bit of an issue here in the
playmaking department at the
moment, we know you played
your last game in the Super
League grand final for Catalans
but would you consider and
would you be available?*
"I think if he had of said yes.
there is a damn good chance he
would be wearing a Parramatta
Eels jersey."

  • Sounds like Panic stations after the horse has bolted.

    • James Graham is spot on, as he has not played in 6 months he needs to go through certain protocols in order to have his contract registered. Even when it is registered Moses will only have a few weeks left before he is back.

      •

Unless the Eels medical staff expect Moses to be unavailable for longer than we have been told.

        • BA said he had been told 8-10 weeks but pain is going and see how it goes putting weight on the foot. Now it is an injury where anything can happen where it can get worse at 6 week scan. But BA is practically saying 8-10 expected but don't be surprised if earlier, with Moses the competitor he is it wouldn't surprise me. Of course, they could hold him back a week or two if they need to, but 5 weeks, then bye then Brisbane in Round 10 or Sunday the following week against Melbourne can be realistic.

BA is usually a straight shooter, if it was worse he would know and i doubt he would comment that Moses could come back earlier if he didn't believe it.

If he doesn't then i am happy to say i am wrong of course.

          • This injury a Jones fracture has a lot of history where the surgery has failed because athletes have come back too quickly, the failure is significant for those that come back quicker than 9 weeks and much better for those that have waited the 10 plus..... this is not the sort of injury you can come back earlier from regardless of how tough and determined you may be.

If people go to Google there is an extensive research done in Canada on the subject, its especially appropriate for NFL , its an interesting read and its a serious injury mainly because the bones are so fine that the size of the screw can reem the bone and make it worse.

People on here may remember (I think Mutts pointed it out) that Reed Mahoney had a similar injury around Covid time.

            • If that is the case Poppa then you could understand that club looking for an experienced halfback.. I'll throw a name out there.. Jackson Hastings.. yes a polarising figure at times but only after a year or two at a club... a short stay wouldn't hurts and on the nose up Newcastle way....?

What worries me is, usually injuries have a fairly accurate and time frame players will be out. You hear things like, this is a 4 to 6 week injury,  but in this case,  we have heard as little as 6 weeks and up to 14 weeks. Such a large time frame difference tells me that the Eels medical team isn't exactly sure.

            • Which is where the media constantly go from 6-12 weeks. Some say two months, others three months. From what i have read about the injury is that at the 4-6 week scan it is all about swelling and the scan, the swelling could go down but the bone not actually healing as it should, that is where the uncertainty comes in. It could work out where the surgery did it's job and is healing nicely and they start or continue the rehab and go from there. Moses of course would say he is ready to go, but the staff need to be cautious to not reinjure. They might start some light weight baring exercises next week or week after.

I think the thing they are waiting for is that 4-6 week scan to see if swelling is down and healing is where it should be. If it is then they have a proper figure. Plus also, as BA mentioned, see how he can cope with weight baring on that foot.

I have changed a little and agree with you Slippery in that the wide time frame can be concerning and that is due to the type of injury seems to be a bastard in terms of unpredictability. Think it is all good then the scans show healing is taking longer than usual and sets you back a month.

        • Could take anywhere from 10 to 16 weeks for this type of injury to heal properly. 8 weeks is the absolute best case scenario

          • That's what BA was told and what he said but said Moses could be back early, it was in his media press conference today. With rigorous rehab, they can get sport athletes back around 6-8 if lucky. Read in it in a journal article last week, cause i have no life. Again, no guarentee as it could very well be 8 weeks or more if complications appear and this type of injury is known to develop complications along the way.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7219008/ Here is the article, it is a good read. It does say 8.7 for NFL players but also related to their high BMI level on the weight barring.

Again could be 6, could be 8, could be 12. But BA mentioned 8-10 but said depending of course on how it feels and how much weight he can put on it will determine it, but said the pain is already starting to lower.
