Official: Parramatta Eels upgrade Teancum Brown

The Parramatta Eels are pleased to announce that rising talent Teancum Brown has been upgraded to a development contract for the 2026 season, and an NRL contract extension for the 2027 and 2028 seasons.

Brown joined the Eels in 2024 in the Club’s Jersey Flegg squad and has since demonstrated steady improvement, and a commitment to developing his all-round game.

General Manager of Football Mark O’Neill praised Brown’s recent form and commitment to improvement.

“Teancum thoroughly deserves this opportunity. He has worked incredibly hard during the pre-season which impressed his teammates and coaches.” O’Neill said. “Teancum has a good engine for a big man, loves to compete and he displayed a level of confidence in the trial matches which he can take into the season ahead."

The development contract in 2026 will allow Brown to continue training full-time within the NRL system, gaining valuable experience alongside the Club’s senior squad. His upgraded deal through 2028 reflects the Eels’ long-term belief in his potential and the role he can play at NRL level in the coming seasons.

              • Bushie only had one thing to teach Radrandra - run straight.   An under 5s coach could have coached semi with all that natural ability  - still,  bush arthur couldn't help him in defence as was with Sivo, who had nfi when to stay in or rush out of his line.

How many times was Sivo suspended for rushing in like a chicken with his head chopped off ???

Our wide defence under bushie was always the joke of the league.

Against South Sydney they tore ba a new ass hole on nearly every occasion with people rushing out of the line like a bunch of goats 🐐,  no disrespect to the players thats what they were taught

                • That's what a good coach does though chief you put a player in the best position to succeed and the mentioned did that and became the best winger and ball runner in the nrl.We got anyone else in that realm since Grothe Snr ?

                • Glad you bought up South Sydney and that finals game who got suspended for PeDs again 48 hours from the finals that's the real ass ripping and funny you say Souths as I think you'll find they ripped just about everyone a new one over that period.

Just for reference who was the last Parra coach to take a FG side to the GF again ?

That must have been the best and worst day of your life seeing the club lose.

                  • If I may, B Smith 2001 ( and he should have had at least one win), Ando 09 and BA 22......

                • Always so we weren't near the top in the comp defensively 19-20 cmon son BAs still got you owned 2 years plus down the track.

              • For me, the poor edge defence and compressed inside was a consistent issue. From 2020-24, defence regressed each year from 3rd to 16th (14.4 to 29.8pg conceded). A 5-year slide.

                A culture and systems issue.

BA did some good things: consistent finals 2019-22, the rebuild then, the grand final appearance, the development of some players, and facing tough times in the cap scandal.

But personally, I agree with what Mitch Moses said in a podcast last year: the team was very up and down even in 2022, the grand final year.

We were Jeckyl-Hyde. Ironically, the opposite of BA's public steadiness.

Ryles gets more emotional and bangs on the coaching box's glass, but I feel he's got the capacity to get the team more consistent and seems to have dealt with some of the defensive issues re systems and culture. Time will tell of course.

BA mentioned last year in an interview "loyalty" might have been an issue. Well, favoritism of liked players and kin can be a double-edged sword. That didn't help.

At the end of the day, it's subjective. But I understand Chiefy's concerns.

                Year Ladder A(pg) D(pg)

                2020 3/16 19.6 14.4 9th 3rd
                2021 6/16 23.6 19.0 7th 4th
                2022 4/16 GF 25.3 20.4 5th 8th
                2023 10/17 24.5 23.9 6th 11th
                2024 15/17 23.4 29.8 8th 16th

                • What is interesting here for me is that the 2001, 2009 and 2022 GF all had some form of similarity where our defence let us down with some soft tries and you could say particualrly 22 and 01 that we were gone by half time. I was at both 2001 and 2009 and 09 we only had a chance at the back end and made a couple of erros and also Fui (from memory dropped ball that I reckon was not....or something like this) and then game over.

2022 - lost it in the first 20 it seemed and from memory the players didn't stay together before the GF? or am I wrong.

2021 was the Penrith trainer from memory?

                  • Mitchy, for as long as I've watched the Eels over 46 years, outside the amazing 80s, I felt we had a soft underbelly that would crack when enough of a "blow torch" was applied.

Ryles has given me hope that maybe, just maybe, (can I say maybe once again), that might change. We will see.

What makes me even more intrigued is that up-top (the Big Four along with the Club) are on the same page. Even when they disagree on matters, they're commited to the same cause. I don't think that's normal for us. Fitzy didn't even want Gibson at the club, and what a sliding doors moment that would've been. I know Jim Sarantinos and co haven't always been the most popular on here, but what he's done for the club over the last decade is seriously under-rated. Without that up top, there's no chance of badge-first unity down stream especially since we will always have some white-anting and well-intentioned fans like Spagnolo et al.

                    • Agreed, I also think when B Smith had that team in the 98 era (Pay / McCracken / Smith / Dymock) plus some others we had the steel; it was when they left for me that we softened a tad. I was at the minor semi againts Norths at Parra when we belted them. We had some youth too in that era......Cayless / Hindmarsh / Vella and co.

It starts and ends with the defence; even Brisbane had some defence last year.

                    • Absolutely, Mitchy. Pay, Dymock, Smith, McCracken—The Big Four—added class and steel. And without the SL war, they don't happen for us. IMO, without Walsh, who saved more tries than he scored, the Broncos probably don't win the 2025 GF.
