Parramatta Eels sign North Queensland Cowboys prop Carl Webb

PARRAMATTA have notched a second recruitment victory over Newcastle in a week, this time winning the race to sign former Test prop Carl Webb.
Sport Confidential can reveal Webb will join the Eels on a two-year contract next season after agreeing to terms last night.

The 29-year-old stopped off in Sydney last weekend to meet officials from both Parramatta and Newcastle. Both clubs offered him similar terms, but Webb was drawn towards Parramatta's history and status as one of the NRL's best-supported clubs.

It's also understood Webb - a former champion amateur boxer who made his pro debut in January - was a fan of the Eels' pugilistic connections to Danny Green and Vic Darchinyan.

The Eels' coup comes less than a week after the club defied Newcastle's interest in boom second-rower Justin Horo, who has committed for another three seasons.

And don't be surprised if Reni Maitua also elects to resume his career in the same colours as Webb. Maitua visited Parramatta's gym and offices yesterday morning and is expected to make a call between the Eels, Storm and Tigers by the end of this week.

  • well i think he can only improve and might surprise are few people and do well.
  • Good signing. A fit Webb will bring a lot to the eels. He has got that mongrol factor and he will also bring passion. I'm really glad trhey signed him and here's hoping that Matua will be next. A couple of hard head forwards like these two will only strengthen our pack next year.
  • *fingers crossed* for reni maitua
  • What happened to the 1 year trial offer? a two year contract is way too risky IMO. If we hadn't left our recruiting to the last minute, we may have had better options. Good signing? yeah right, he was released by the wooden spooners.....so i take it we r sepnding our Cooper money on Maitua and Webb?
  • its risky but sometimes these things work.
  • Im not against Carl Webb or Reni but I dont think they answer our problems at all. Our defence all year was solid probably better than 2009. The issue this year was our attack.

Forwards in 2011 will not be an issue if you add Shack, Webb and Reni plus Lassalo to the 2010 line up.

WE NEED A PLAYMAKER ! And we should look to dump Tahu's big bag of cash for someone that can make a break
  • We have signed Brad murray so give him the chance I say
  • I'm of the belief that Webb is a good signing.

With a solid and injury-free off-season, I think Carl Webb can emulate the form that saw him make the QLD and Australian sides.
There's no doubt that the talent is there, he just needs to get through the off-season and train hard and improve on some areas in his game, and he'll be sweet.
  • cmon guys ,lets look at this a s a positive ,we have finally signed someone.Ok ,hes had a few injuries and been a bit down on form ,but with a good off season ,lets hope he can recapture the form he showed a couple of years ago.Lets not bag the bloke out before hes even here ,give him a chance....apparently no players want to come to parra ,well he does ,and i heard yesterday that one of the main reasons he liked parra was that he was so impressedc with the supporters and their passion ,so I say give him a go ,before writing him off .

Its a gamble, lets hope it pays off
