PETER Sterling's legacy won't be playing on Chris Sandow's mind when Parramatta's prized recruit wears the famous blue and gold No. 7 jumper for the first time this Saturday night.

In a first-up hitout for his new club against the Wests Tigers in Gosford, Sandow will step into one of the game's most daunting shadows.

Over the years, 30 other players have had a crack at filling Sterlo's boots but so far none have come close.

But asked yesterday if the expectation was a burden counting down to the game, Sandow just laughed.

"Nah man, I never saw him play ... I wasn't born until 1989," he said.

The Eels' last premiership was way back in 1986 - and since you only have to look at the long line of names who have attempted to return the club to its former glory.

But while playing up to Sterlo's legacy doesn't enter his thoughts, Sandow admits another great halfback made a huge impression on him last weekend - when he partnered Johnathan Thurston in the halves for the Indigenous All Stars.

He says he was blown away not so much at what Thurston said, but how he said it. How he took charge throughout the week and in the game, and commanded respect.

"I just watched what he was doing during the week," he explained. "He just keeps talking, telling blokes what to do ... when he wants the ball, they give him the ball.

"It's just about leading the team around. I think it is something I could add to my game, just talking a bit more and taking charge.

"I've never been a big talker on the field but it is something I can learn from."

Playing alongside Thurston also sparked another ambition.

Sandow said it was his first rep game since he played for the Australian Schoolboys back in 2006.

And while he knows Cooper Cronk has a mortgage on the Queensland number seven for this year, you can't blame a bloke for dreaming.

"It's not on my mind at the moment, I've just got to play well for Parra and if I play well for Parramatta, who knows," he said.

"But I won't get too far ahead of myself. Cooper is a great player and he has been around for years, I won't get ahead of myself yet."

Right now, all he wants is to do right by the Eels.

"It will be special playing with the guys you've put the hard yards in with for the last few months," he said.

Will he be nervous running out? "No. It's just another game of footy,' he said.

  •  Eels looking very fit cant wait for trial match

  • How many more stories are there going to be about Sandow before the season starts? He's not at Souths anymore guys, there should be no pre-season hype

  • Haha no we are not souths, know one has said we will win the comp this year to pay back rusty. Souths are always a real title threat this time of year.
  • Parramatta sells papers and Sandow is a the buzz word right now.

This is the only thing lacking in Sandows game. Its good to see he recognises that and has been influenced by JT to talk more. If he can lead the team more Parra will be much better for it.

  • Good luck Sandow

Hopefully he can do awesome in the trials and shift that momentum into the league games

  • Gotta love the media.

No GF win since Sterlo so he was obviously the ONLY player to win it for us.

Why don't they get onto the new wingers - "Are you nervous about becoming the next GURU (snr)?"

What about Roberts - "Are you nervous about becoming the next Bert?"

Is Willie nervous about becoming the next Zip-zip?

What about poor Ryan or Esi - "How nervous are you about becoming the next Crow?"

Why not pick on Hayne - "Jarryd you do know Ken Thornett was a prolific goal kicker - are you nervous about NOT being a goal kicker and therefore NOT a complete Fullback?"

"Reni. How does it feel to be filling the boots of the Preying Mantis - Mr Pepetual Motion?"

Holy flattened footballs Batman - do we have a team of nervous neurotic wanna be's or just some jumped up journo that has no idea how to find a real story?

    • I watched Sterlo play in the grand finals and every other game. So I think Sandow is blowing raspberries at my age too! Now THAT is holy flattened footballs! Cheeky little bugger than CS
  • Hope he scores 6 tries on his own against The broncos in Round 1 and breaks Jamie Lyons record the beady eyed little prick

  • Don't get me started Prof.

The days when Eskys were allowed - you generally could pick up a decent looking sheila if you didn't hit the Esky too hard - or get your lights punched out by her bf ( 1 on 1 - no gang warfare) plus the bf probably wouldn't be chucked out of the ground. lol

Kids running onto the field after the match to try for autographs.

Trying to sneak into the club when you were UNDER 21.

Long blonde hair flowing in the breeze and having problems telling Sterlo from Jason Taylor

CS could never do the Sterlo hair thing to start with - so I can't see him even getting a look in.
