Open letter to the NRL

I am writing this email in absolute frustration - not at the nrl, but at what this game has become.I would consider myself an educated person, middle income in a white collar management role. I am not writing to give advice on what needs to change, or tell you how "tough the game was when I played" that people quite often roll out.My concern is that in my opinion the game has been changed by teams like Melbourne to a high completion, possession based competition resulting in often lacklustre and boring play. The teams such as parramatta and the warriors who play open expansive football suffer due to the lower completions of such play. This is where my grievance is. When a team such as parra are willing to play a low percentage style of game they are sacrificing completion for entertainment value, and when the nrl is in the business of entertainment they should be working to encourage this - not discourage by making the penalty for errors so huge.Coupled with an already disadvantage is the curious behaviour of certain referees. I fully acknowledge mistakes are made - however when it becomes a trend rather than an anomaly questions have to be asked. In a game where possession and completion are now everything then how can a referee be allowed to sway a game considerably in favour of certain teams? You ask why crowds are down! We'll tonight after paying for dinner and drinks ( not to mention the season tickets and merchandise purchased throughout the year) I ask myself "why bother?" The teams with the most lacklustre play are advantaged, and then referees ultimately decide games with swings of possession. However by boycotting games this only truly effects my team -the one trying to entertain.I will be overseas on business for part of the nrl finals - and thank goodness for that, because the referees have cost one of the last entertaining teams a finals shot.So in summary, when next the nrl are brainstorming ways to get the crowds back, just remember that fans want to watch entertaining footy and not have referees decide the fate of teams. Thank you.
