  • Absolutely agree that bringing more skill to the boardroom will only lead to better things. Getting all clubs to happily agree is another thing.
  • There's some nice ideas there no doubt. Clubs should be encourage to implement some of these. However the NRL has no jurisdiction over the clubs that run NRL teams. Members / shareholders own and control the clubs and only they can make those changes. Unless the NRL wants to take ownership of the 16 NRL clubs then all they can do is recommend these changes but beyond that they have no legal power to insist on anything.
Maybe the NRL could incentivise clubs to fall in line and financial punish those that don't but again members / owners would need to agree.
As a member I am intrigued by what constitutes an independent Board member. Especially if the NRL is insisting that the Chairman be independent which I assume means a non member. Who decides if said independent Board member is appropriately qualified and suitable for such a role? Members / owners would be handing control to effectively an unknown.
Personally I think this is pie in the sky stuff.
    • You could do it, Muttman, by adding incentives to the salary cap. Simple and costs the NRL nothing. Actually quite logical too as progressive clubs should have more money to feed the extra cap availability.

    • I tend to agree Bernie, that financial incentives / penalties are all that the NRL could do. However the members / owners still need to agree to the changes. For example what happens if the NRL insist on say 3 independent Eels members but the membership don't agree? The Eels get financially penalised sure but the changes still do not get inplemented. The members will always have the final say and they do not always vote the way they should.
  • Ridiculous idea forcing the clubs to put a woman on every board, people should be there on merits, not wether they are a man or women, just ridiculous stuff from Smith, he should take up a position with some dopey feminist group.

The board members get voted in by the fans, they vote men in for a reason, because they are the better canditates in the supporters eyes, its a mans game, played by men, forcing a woman onto every board is actually sexist in its very nature, its saying if women arnt good enough to run for a board and be voted in that they will give them a leg up for the sake of it, its pathetic.

Let women have a say in the running of the game at their own peril, the games already been dumbed down and softened enough, this will really seal the deal.

Why dont we start making it manditory that we have a player of each different culture and religion on each team, thats how ridiculous this is.

Dave Smiths clearly an idiot of massive proportions if this is what he is thinking about.

    • Agree Snake, tokenism at it's worst.  Just pick the best candidate is it that hard???

    • Fernwood should have at least one male member.

      And that should be me.

    • I'm sure there are female employees that the board can ask for points of view.
  • Al its actually degrading to women, its saying that if they arnt good enough to get on a board we will put one there for the sake of it, it degrades the whole process of voting and picking the best person for the job, Smith thinks its groundbreaking stuff, its actually backwards in its very nature, as you said, tokenism at its worst, and how is a woman on each board going to attract more fans to the game, just ridiculous stuff, i've lost all respect over Smith for this, he is a RL blow in anyway, NFI.

    • Yep it's dumb and not needed, giving them a spot for the sake of it.  I'd be embarrassed if i was a woman.
