Yes I would have thought the NRL directly owning a controlling share of a RL club would be a conflict of interest.
Of course it is a conflict of interest especially when Smith guarantees "“The difference is that, financially, they will be one of the top tier clubs in the competition." Then you have all thee subjective decisions the NRL makes such as marquee payments. Very messy.
They've injected $5 million into the club and are already looking for a suitable majority shareholder to take over. Smith said on Triple M that the NRL doesn't want to be owning clubs and as soon as a suitable organisation comes to the table, they'll hand the club over.
