NRL Salary Cap. Is it working?

I constantly hear sporting commentators say that the salary cap evens the comp, and I totally agree, but only if it is used correctly. The thing that needs fixing is the third party deals. What is the point in having a salary cap and then allowing 3rd party deals that are mostly unrestricted? I believe that the Storm had $1,000,000 plus and the Broncos about $800,000 in third party payments to players in 2018. Teams such as the Eels and Bulldogs had as little as $50,000 in third party deals. Obviously this makes the entire system totally unfair. Surely this is something that needs fixing ASAP. I have a couple of ideas.

 1. Clubs are limited to how much 3rd party money they can use.

 2. All money generated from 3rd party deals is given to the NRL. It is then divided equally amongst all 16 clubs.

  • The salary cap wasn't brought in to even out the comp, it was to stop the clubs from going broke by spending too much on players in order to chase a premiership. The NRL bigwigs now use it as some sort of catchcry in an attempt to reinforce the illusion that it's an even competition, when no one really believes it. Your two ideas won't float, TPA's are there so that players can earn extra money through their popularity as players, if they were stopped it would be a restraint on trade and we'd probably end up with a lot of players switching to more lucrative codes. If the money got distributed evenly then there'd be no point in having them. No one's gonna do extra work to give less popular players or clubs extra money. There's no easy solution, however the ideas that Brett Allen has floated in the past in regards to soft caps and rewards for keeping loyal local juniors seem to make sense and have resonated with me, but seeing as the NRL are phuktards, they'd never go for it...

    •   I don't want or think TPA's should be stopped, they should be made fair. Obviously, if one, two or three teams have $700,000 to $1,000,000 more than other teams to pay players, those teams have a huge advantage.

So if the TPA's can't be made fair for all clubs maybe the NRL needs to top up the clubs that are struggling with TPA's? It wouldn't be that much money considering the TV deal and other money generated by the NRL. Going by the graph and the story posted on the NRL website, the NRL would need to contribute about $12,000,000 to the clubs. That is very little when you consider the amount given to the clubs in yearly grants would be around $160,000,000 per season. I don't like posting things without facts and the above amount is my guess. That's $10,000,000 to each of the 16 clubs.

      • Look at us, lowest TPAs in the comp, how are we meant to compete?

Outstanding work once again Bernie Gurr.

2nd biggest business district in NSW and bottom of the barrel in TPAs, what a complete joke.

        • TPAs aren't sponsorships. Sponsorships are the responsibility of the people running the club. TPAs are from businesses unconnected with the club. When businesses are connected it's a sponsorship, and any money has to go on the cap.

Anyway we had plenty of TPAs three years ago but we got caught. Other clubs have also been caught over the years. None of these TPAs are legit. Why would companies throw money at players when they can use the money to sponsor the club instead?

        • But Snake, clubs are not really meant to setup TPA's.

          • Where did i say in any way shape or form clubs set up TPAs?

Bernie stated that the club was moving away from TPAs, with that type of attitude no wonder we are the lowest.

That you guys think i dont understand the rules is cute, ive only written 5 blogs on it.

            • Him saying we’re moving away from TPAs isn’t making a decision, it’s describing reality. Our infighting over the last decade has alienated all of the wealthy fans required to tip in TPAs to boost player salaries outside the cap. That’s not the fault of anyone currently at the club.

      • Wow the roosters do manage thier cap well. Find it hard to believe they only have that much in TPAs

      • The NRL doesn't have a spare $12m to distribute to the clubs. To all intents and purposes the ARLC is broke, it has already spent money the game hasn't earned, and even if it did, what incentive would the likes of the Storm & the Broncos have to source these TPA's if the other clubs are just going to get the same money given to them by the NRL ?

The league distributes $13m to each club, that's $208m in total per year. The ARLC only generated $500m last year and it still has to fund the grassroots & the administration out of the balance of that revenue. The ARLC sprouted that it made a profit of $43m last year, and it did on paper, but that was in large part due to advances in broadcasting revenue and other one off receivables. The commission actually operated at a loss last year.

  • In regards to your question, no, it's not working as a direct result of the way tpa's are manipulated. Where they should be a way for a player to earn extra, without club interference, they are now a sneaky way for (smart) clubs to have big financial advantages over the rest of the comp, and are anything but "independent" from the club in the way they are intended to be used.
