      • It's unlikely we'll be buying ourselves out of a hole with the big-bucked, big names we desperately crave. If or when we do, it's going to be old-school. Hard Yakka. Kaizen. And a few hail Marys perhaps.

Remind me what big-names did the Panthers recruit to win 4-titles during 2021-2024? They actually let go of their bigger names like RCG, Waqa, Maloney first. They suffer one issue we do: a lack of sugar-daddy billionaires to circumnavigate the hard-cap even with Cameron and Gus before hand.

Let's be honest. Big-names don't always pay off. David Fifita, Anthony Watmough, Keiran Foran, Corey Norman, Sandow, and even the Justin Poores of the world. How'd they go? Win a club any titles?

Geez, even the Broncos, armed to their teeth with sugar daddies, and big names on-and-off-field haven't won a title in 20 years.

Matt Cameron: the blueprint for our success? He wasn't exactly a big-name before the Panthers titles. Imagine the Eels signing a GM or CEO who was a long-time woodwork teacher with juniors' coaching experience but didn't want to stay in coaching because 'contractual' work wasn't stable employment like teaching. This site would need a week of "maintanence", and a full-time team of exorcists and clinical psychiatrists to save our souls.

    • Blue Eel, and therein lies another issue for the NRL, the fact the Bronco's are run by some ex-players being involved and also have not learnt from having some hard heads in the team. The fact they earn so much and have access to so many decent players is also an idictment on the club.

Wests are another issue, and yet Abdo the clown and co will bring in more teams to drain the talent...

    • BE who were the top 5?

      Panthers

      Brisbane

      Melbourne

      Dogs

      Parramatta

  • Benji's desire to be a head coach and the Tigers wish to return to 2005 have combined into this Frankenstein's monster. No one becomes a good head coach with 1 season of assistant coaching. He needed to go and serve a long term apprenticeship somewhere. Bennett probably would have taken him at the Dolphins. But instead he rushed into this gig and is learning the hard way that as a head coach you have to know yourself inside and out.

We see that with Ryles. He's clear in his plan, he knows what he wants to do and he's getting through to our players. Admittedly he has a more stable club around him.

    • Spot on Super. Benji i actually feel a little sorry for in that he was not set up to succeed. There was a plan in place for him to take over in 2025, serving under Sheens in 2023-24. But it should have been at least coach Flegg or Cup in 2023, assistant in 2024. Yeah Sheens had a very poor 2023 but why just rush Benji in? Stick to the plan. Yes, Benji was practically coaching in the box at the backend of 2023 as Sheens was basically sacked but stayed on, but Sheens was still there overseeing it.

Benji needed to learn how to deal with players, media, what you should and shouldn't do etc. Api Koroisau coaches the team mainly, i heard that last year when Galvin wanted out that Api is the one who does most of the game plans. But you are right the idea from the Wests Tigers and Benji is recreating the attacking juggernaut of 2005, but the problem there is that was also one of the worst premiership winning defensive outfits ever. The game caught up quick and we know defence is the most important aspect of winning. Statistically premiership winning teams have top 3 defences.

But how does Benji know better? You are right, a year or two with Bennett at least at Dolphins then come to Wests in 2025 would have been better. Now that Richardson is there, after Benji was hired, he would be looking at getting his own man in if Benji cannot get them back up in 2025. If somehow Benji survives for 2026 it wont be long before pressure is there again.

Richardson will want Burgess, doubt he would want it back. Ryles would not have taken this job if offered. We knock the board etc at Parramatta but they will try their best to give Ryles what he needs and give him time and back his decisions. Richardson is doing so with Benji but also pretty much throwing him under the bus saying "Alright Benji, you want Api to win now over Da Silva for the future you get him. But if it fails you are out."

      • LB, a salient point has been missed, they had Sheens to oversee Benji and he coached them back in 05. I am not saying he was saviour but he was and is a trusted leader and for whatever reasons is not there now.

If Benji has players running the ship, then the SS Minnow is what it should be known as.

        • I did say Sheens was there. He was meant to oversee Benji for 2 years, they moved him on quick i believe for a few reasons. 1) They were so bad in 2023 that they wanted to save face with fans by making Benji the face and fans would be lenient to Benji being a club legend. 2) Sheens got his nose out of joint that even though the plan was to transfer to Benji, it went sour quick where the feel was the club just wanted Benji to go in sooner and Sheens would have felt somewhat less in his ego. Sheens was set to go into a role behind the scenes but again went so sour he was removed completely. Plus Sheens and Benji butted heads a lot.

          • I see that mate; however IMO if Sheens was there we would not be seeing some of these issues; and hence the supposed Douehi dust up from training in round 16; that just should never happen. It is why you have shadow players / assistants. I think Benji will end up like a Barrett (slap slap) and needs 5 yrs working elsewhere.

            • Mitchy i am a bit lost as it seems you are disagreeing with me when you and i are on same path. All i said about Sheens was he was meant to be a place holder to give Marshall time to get used to coaching and the plan was thrown out pretty much before 2023 finished.

I agree, the issues with like Doueihi and even Galvin leaving along with Da Silva do not happen nor happen to the extent in which they happened if Sheens was in charge.

              • LB, mate its all ok. I am just making a point that Benji is a rookie; and Sheensy for all his worth was a wise statesman; and that some of these issues that have occurred may not have if Sheens was there.

All ok, and this is not AI generated. I also only argue with myself!
