NRL All Stars "Australian National Anthem"

Im all for the Indigenous rights of the native people of Australia but Im somewhat disappointed in the Indigenous All Stars refusing to acknowledge and participate in the Australian National Anthem. The Maori All Stars still sang the New Zealand Anthem then performed their cultural dance. Im aware that many Indigenous people of Australia have  suffered but nevertheless its time to move on and look at the positives that they have also benefited from. Australia is made up of people of all cultures and nations and the indigenous people of this nation have slowly progressed and their culture is alive and well. Just disappointed in their attitude towards the National Anthem that many great men and women have given their lives for and a little respect would have been better than their choice to even refuse to join in.

    • Have to agree Fong! There are so many positives that they and all people who make Australia their home can be grateful for. Its the greatest nation on earth ( at least used to be) the Indigenous people of this nation have much to be thankful for and its just as well the Portuguese, Spanish, Chinese or Japanese didnt discover this land and colonise it as there wouldnt be any Parramatta Eels or Indigenous All Stars.

        • If you travel to a little part of the world called Europe Fongy, you'll actually find some countries with better health, education & welfare systems than Australia. A lot better. Not to mention better maternity leave, working conditions, workers rights etc. But to have been there and seen it, you'd need to be open-minded and willing to experience different things in life, let's be honest, one can see that isn't you by reading your comments on this site.

          • At the cost of nearly 50%. personal tax rates.I presume it is the Scandinavian countries you are referring to.Thanks to their suicidal influx of ignorant, third world economic refugees, now the rape capitals of Europe .

  • Free country . Don't have to sing a song

also wasn't the national team in which by the way you will always see individuals not signing along

I have no issue they didn't sing it as long as they were not acting disrespectful whilst they didn't sing.

    As I couldn't give 2 f### about the game I didn't watch it

        • I don't think they'd even let you play Bingo up at the local RSL if you refused to sing the national anthem Poppa?

But really, if on the one hand you are calling for recognition as an indigenous people from the "Non indigenous" masses as Preston Cambell did quite eloquently and asking us to acknowledge them and their culture. Well, I'm afraid that not acknowledging "ours and their" mutual "National Anthem" is a bit rich and a clear sign of the ignorance that pervades this argument. How can anyone think forging a racial wedge between us and them is going to be seen as an endearment reaching out for unity?

              • Absolutely agree Pops and thanks for the encouragement which I value and take on board.

            • Last paragraph says it all. The concept should not have started in the first place. Another black eye for the NRL

      • They weren't representing there country. They were representing there culture.

          • I'd argue that there culture is representative of there culture.

And poppa before the 1967 referendum  ( where you around?) the dominant culture in Australia was quite happy to not recognise Aboriginal people as Australian.

The irony is that Aboriginal people weren't allowed to vote for themselves if they wanted to be recognised as Australians.

Come to think of it, no one ever asked me if I wanted to be Australian, just by virtue of historical happenstance I was given the label.

If we changed the name of Australia, do we cease to be Australians? Or is an Australian defined by the unique cultural idioms? Do we have to sing the new countries new anthem, even though we don't really have any historical or cultural attachment to it? Are we then unnewcountryiam?

    • Yes, Kenny it is a free country but the freedom came at a cost of many lives of courageous men and women who sacrificed their lives to defend this nation. The freedom also came on the back of pioneers, and farmers and hard working people to make this nation something special where people come from all over the world to make Australia their home. To have the attitude of not showing some respect for the nations national anthem (regardless of your cultural, religious or political) views is just blatantly disrespectful.
