In a massive blow for Perth and a stunning development in the battle for the 18th NRL licence, the Western Bears have had their bid to join the league rejected by Peter V’landys and the ARL Commission.
Article in the SMH says
"The NRL has been clear that a prerequisite for a team in Perth will be a link with the North Sydney Bears, and that won’t change under new negotiations with government.
They have informed North Sydney officials that their decision to cut ties with the consortium will not impact on their hopes of returning to the competition, should a Perth team be introduced in the competition from as early as 2027"

"News Corp reported that while the bid document was comprehensive, it didn’t meet the NRL’s financial requirements.
“The bid that the consortium has put in has been rejected,” he said.
“We will still deal with the Western Australian government to try and resuscitate the bid. The bid that they put in was significantly short.
“No bid team can take the expansion process for granted. I have made this clear from day one.
“We will only expand if there is a firm business case and at the moment Perth’s business case doesn’t stack up. If we can’t stack it up I can’t take it to the members for consideration.
“All I will say their bid is extremely short. I will have more talks with the WA government, but not necessarily the current consortium.”
However, the NRL is also reportedly considering a move to own and operate their own WA expansion team, although the Western Bears consortium is facing emergency talks with V’landys t"

How can the NRL consider a move to own and operate their own WA expansion team, it is clear conflict of interest when they enforce the salary cap, officiate games and the match review committee.
PVL has done pretty well in most things but some recent decisions such as keeping Annersely in charge of refereeing, expansion clubs and even considering running their own team make me question if it is time for him to move on.
Agree it's a extremely bad idea, PVL has done some great things for the game BUT recently he has dropped the ball when it's comes to expansion
Yeah love it how he says all bids were poor, bar PNG. PNG is the worst of them all, it's just the love child idea of PVL as to why he sees it's fine. Ironic how he says financially they are disappointing yet PNG would have the least amount of money. Government not as secure as you think with putting money in. After the 10 years they'll pull it.
I reckon we should stay at 18. Get cold feet over the game and I think leave it as is, add one more so we have even numbers and an extra game and leave it.
PNG had a 600million dollar funding behind it, the largest of any rugby league club ever. I'd say that's a pretty strong bid. The thing people don't understand about png is its political
People do understand, corruption would be the biggest concern for the aus govt and the NRL
What are you talking about corruption? If they've got the money, players and fans why not?
countless articles you can read about political and commerical corruption, not really a great destination for a NRL team.
Sounds like you have a bias against png. Respectfully, an nrl team would be a private organisation in png the government has nothing to do with. Where would you have rathered the nrl expanded
There will be governing bodies on the board for sure. As for where to expand? Pacific Islands based in North Island favouring Fiji, Tonga and Samoa. You have NZ on board with a 2nd team and it is there team, but Polyneasian people in Australia too will support it.
Perth as well is a fair case.
Brisbane/Cairns.
Sorry RB, you might claim i too have a bias against PNG, i merely believe it is a bad idea to expand there. They love the sport, but the country itself if not ready for a national team in a competition. So many red flags. It is a hard sell for players and coaches.
