Nathan Brown

First off, let me start by saying that whilst I don't comment much here I do read as many of the blogs as I can, and aside from the few tiffs that I see on here, there are some real footy brains here so I though I would post about something I have been noticing of late and see what you guys think.

Nathan Brown. I love the guy and he has been great for the team this year, and will probably end up the buy of the year. But, has anyone else noticed that he is starting to remind a bit of a Paul Gallen type player? By that I mean that he is taking a lot of hit ups, not all of them effective, and, at times is taking the ball away from the ball players. Too often I see him with the ball on the fourth tackle, when the likes of Moses, Norman, French should have the ball trying to create something. I just feel he is doing too much work now and it is starting to diminish the effectiveness of what he does. On Friday he had 22 runs, 14 in the first half, with the next being Mannah on 10. 22 runs is too many I think, I would prefer he had a few less and had a bit more impact in them.

Thoughts?

  • Nope - he's doing exactly what he needs to and what BA wants him to do. He takes more hit ups because at that point in time he probably needs to take it. If something isn't broken why fix it. Im sure BA is happy with what he's doing, if he wasn't then Brown will know about it.

  • His the one taking the hit ups when the forwards are tired his reliable, I don't believe his over stepping at all in fact complementing our team
  • Overthinking it mate. Maybe if norman and moses werent creating attacking chances but they are.

  • Fair call everyone, just something I have been noticing. I don't necessarily want to change a winning formula either. I guess my concern is more long term than short. Remember Nathan Hindmarsh was a quality edge backrower early in his career until he got bogged down doing work. Yes, he still did a good job for the team, but he never reached his potential as a player I think, and I fear Brown may go down a similar path. Either way, like I said, I love what he has been able to bring to the team this year and he will be a valuable asset come finals footy too

  • I disagree, brown is turning into Corey Parker style player and I'm loving it. I didnt like Parker because he was a Queenslander but boy was he a good player.
    • agree with Nitram regarding corey parker. His runs always look dangerous, with the option of offloading after contact, before contact to another forward or out the back.

Gallen is more tuck in under his arm and run, look for an offload post contact if able.

  • Hi mate,

I do understand where you're coming from. I was thinking the same a couple of weeks ago, but the majority of his carries are when we really need someone to get us out of trouble. He's really putting his body on the line for the team.
Difference between brown and Gallen at the moment is brown is passing before the line a lot more. Gallen makes it all about him by trying to dominate the collision and either offloading or milking a quick play the ball or penalty.
I reckon his involvement is spot on at the moment.
  • Its the Hookers fault, if he passes the ball to him then he runs...If Norman or Moses wants the ball then they need to call for it.

  • I don't think he does many ineffective hit ups he either gets an offload away or makes ten metres with a quick play the ball. He's the best forward in the game at the moment in my opinion. A lot of our good attack comes off his back
  • Agree with this blog, time for BA to sack Brown.
