My suggested junior draft

Yes I have blogged about the draft recently, but I have given some thought to the details. The first target is country areas.Bush juniors in NSW and QLD are selected for Nrl academies. No NRL clubs are to recruit country juniors below academy age. They can recruit juniors not selected for academies. The academies play each other in organised competitions. The juniors in the academies also participate in education or vocational training. Upon graduation the players move into a draft with funds raised for selection returned to their bush club or the group that their club is in. NB- interstate players from other states are also eligible for these academies.Pacific Island nations such as Fiji, Tonga, Samoa, Cook Islands and PNG have Nrl academies established in their homelands. These academies and their programs will be run similar to the Australian academies, with educational and vocational training provided. Upon graduation they join the juniors from the Australian academies in the draft. Any monies raised from the draft will also be returned to fund competitions on the islands. How would this proposal benefit all parties?Country football has long been neglected. Bush clubs are disappearing and NRL clubs are taking the best junior talent with no compensation. This would be a way of generating revenue while at the same time creating organised pathways and vocational programs for young players from the country. The Pacific Islands are a recognised growth area for the game but they do not generate the revenue at their local level to grow the game. This academy and draft program would greatly assist both the code and the players as well as creating pathways. Finally this proposal would allow NRL clubs to continue their local development programs and support of their junior clubs. City based players would not be forced to move interstate as a result of a draft. All current junior rep programs could continue and the number of junior players available to elite levels would be increased through the academy system.Thoughts?

  • Great idea!
  • Thanks mate. I feel very strongly about any threat to our junior system and I think this proposal would provide the nrl with a draft which achieves revenue, education and opportunity where it is needed.
  • I'm against turning over our juniors. This is my alternative.
  • Parramatta care because they pump the money into junior league clubs.
  • Imagine the players that the nrl could identify with this system, not to mention the development of talent.
  • SIXTIES, I would go one further with that -

Bring in an NRL draft ... BUT ... not for the juniors.

The draft is ONLY used at the senior level, that all clubs have until a nominated date (let's say 1st August), that if a GRADED player (NRL, NSW CUP, etc) is NOT offered a contract by that date, then they are automatically moved onto the draft, where they can be drafted into a new team.

Also a player , if they are NOT happy at their current team, at ANY TIME during the year, if they want to leave their club, can voluntarily be placed onto the draft.

I would go so far as to have one further caveat - that if a player decides they want to break their contract before they see out their time and go onto the draft, then the club they leave does not have to continue to pay the player ANY proportion of their previous contract. The NEW club , in taking on a draft player takes a 30% loading discount with that player's fee for that year, not counting against their salary cap for FIRST YEAR ONLY.

just suggestions adding to a well thought out and constructed blog .....

    • Agreed daz. As I stated in my blog about the self destruction of the nrl, the only draft should be a senior draft, but the nrl would face court action from high profile players. Juniors trying to start a career can be bullied to move interstate or to nz. Utterly disgusting.
