Metres per run. We must improve!

I had an inkling that our run meters for our sets were average to poor and after some number cruching. It's proven true.

Don't know if it's going to be recruitment of a big Bopper or the physical improvement of our current forward pack but we need to give Mitch a better platform to take the team forward. Maybe we play too wide instead of going down the middle hard early in our tackle count. I don't know, but I know that running 14th for metres per run is not good enough if we want to aspire for top 8 next season.

  • Yeah didn't need the stats to notice this. Love the ball movement, but sometimes we need to straighten up and non of the forward pack like doing that. Moretti and Williams are the only two I can think of that run straight and hard

    • Couple of things Hilly, the top 4 sides on your list do not inspire.

Maybe when you have a long kicking game (at least when Moses is playing) then you can maybe rationalise it a bit differently.

Alternatively, those numbers need more definition, i.e. individual players stats, before and after our turn around games.

I am not a great believers in some stats unless they can be qualified and interpreted. Analysis and Paralysis can get lost in the big picture but at a level that can differentiate a problem then go for it! e.g. we have a smaller and more mobile pack than in recent years, I don't see us weaker for that. Players like Tuaviti (spell...sorry LB) give us size, so does Greig but how much mobility do we lose? Tuaviti not much Greig a lot! We now have back rowers that can run a lot and much faster than previous versions.

I would like to see some pack weights added up and all teams compared. I suspect we wont be as small as some think, but in saying that I am not convinced over the genuiness of the sizes provided individually.

    • Ryles is implementing different tactics depending on who we play. We have an intelligent coach. On the weekend against the Roosters we moved the ball laterally a lot because we were up against a bigger pack. However if you remember the Manly game earlier in the year we absolutely drilled them up the middle. We have a coach, we just got to hope we can develop/recruit/keep players on the park that can execute his game plans

      • Yes - Ryles does appear to be the smartest coach we've had tactically since Brian Smith.

  • Considering the top 3 teams are 8,9 and 10th on this stat I'm not sure this stat really points to too much. I'd say possession and completion has a far bigger impact on results

    • Yeah, I don't know what these stats are pointing out other than what it actually is.

If we had better kick return metres from our back 5, then I'm sure we'd have better metres per run as well.
