Media over-expectation leads to our downfall...

Phil Rothfield will give us some blubber about Mateo at 1pm.http://blogs.news.com.au/dailytelegraph/buzzwords/index.php/dailytelegraph/comments/why_has_mateo_been_overlooked/"Bookies set to have to pay out $10 million if Eels take title"http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/sport/nrl/bookies-set-to-have-to-pay-out-1-million-if-eels-take-title/story-e6frexq0-1225762943951"Inu back in good books at the Eels"http://www.smh.com.au/news/lhqnews/inu-back-in-good-books-at-the-eels/2009/08/17/1250362030829.htmlIt disconcerts me a little that the Daily Telegraph (and other Sydney papers) gets over-excited about the Eels winning a lot. While it can get me excited as well, I feel like the over-expectations of the media can affect our team.Remember 2001? 2005? We were 'dead-certs' according to every footy rag out there.I almost wish we were still under the radar. I mean, we're still outside the 8! Damn Knights! (not for long baby!)Does anyone know. Are there a mass of Parra fans that work for the Telegraph? They seem to go overboard on Parra stories as soon as we start to win.I mean, I like to read the stories as well, and perhaps a lot of Eels stories sells more papers. I mean, we are the most supported club in Sydney still aren't we?I just worry that the team are reading their own press and at this time of year you can't afford to get complacent.I remember reading the paper daily in 2005 about how the Eels were going to flatten all before them.Look how that turned out.I don't want to bring anyone down, but we all know what it's like to be an Eels fan. Let's just try to keep our excitement and expectations realistic. For now......

  • Mick, its 2009, lets forget about 2001 and 2005. Be positive, go to SFS and support the Mighty Eels.
  • Unfortunately, it's impossible to forget...
    But I try :)
  • There aren't particularly a lot of Parra fans working in the print media - you'll find a lot of Roosters supporters at that little club. Nonetheless, the journos are aware that Parramatta are a very heavily supported club within the Sydney area.

Much as with Collingwood in Melbourne, saturation of Parra related stories WILL sell more papers.
  • The daily rag is the bible of blue-collar western sydney. If the back page headline read "hindmarsh sneezes" it would still sell like hotcakes.
