You may have seen the Eels team list. Ryles put Ryan Matterson in the front row in reserve grade... its a massive Punishment.
Ryan Matterson has a reputation as a selfish player.
The last time (many years ago) he played in a team vs Storm he was smashed and physically belted..
So he never likes playing in a game against the Storm since.
Numerous times like last weekend, he is picked to play against them, he has pulled out with a late mystery last-minute injury... Last weekend Matto did captains run, flew to Melb and on Sunday morning pulls out with a "back strain".
Someone at the club pointed out the obvious stat history about Matto to Ryles on Monday.
So Ryles this week has dropped him to reserve grade where Matterson will be in the front row.
This info is what's been passed on to me....

It looks like a punishment to me.
His small minutes in the trials suggest to me he's slow and unfit, not willing to take the hard runs and provide the grunt/momentum like a good forward should do. Granted he's built like Tarzan but the speed of the game has past Matto. He wouldn't make the top 17 in my view. Any forwards with slow tired legs around the ruck will be carved up by the opposition these days. It's just a huge liability. Lane is trending the same way IMO.
Matto's shitty attitude has comeback to bit him - not paying a fine comes to mind, it had all to do with saving money nothing to do with principal, he is self centred, self absorbed nothing wrong with that but it doesn't work in a team environment - Ryles is establishing a new culture and clowns like Matto,DB are intent on tearing it down ! Jason is well within his rights to show Matto the door.. another dope bits the dust! A few more are in the firing line
If true, I applaud such a move. I look forward to the day this selfish player exits our club. I've never got over his decision to sit out 3 games as opposed to paying $4k! This combined with his performance inconsistency speaks volumes for his attitude.
Well said Modog.
On Parra+ they had pics of the captains run as the players who played wore the captains run shirt. Matto was at training but was wearing the yellow shirt. I reckon Ryles straight up dropped him.

Obviously Matterson's done something to upset Ryles.
That said the conjecture about what, and what he has done in the past is just that "conjecture""
We are very ready to assume on this site about things that we know nothing about.
My comment is he has obviously upset Ryles, what he has done to cause this I wouldn't have a clue and I do not pretend to make assumptions. There are usually two sides to a story. i.e the $4k fine was nothing about being stingy, it was a matter of principle. The people that "harp" on about that have very long memories when they want to and short memories if it suits them.
It was only a few weeks ago that Matterson said the new coaching regime was a breath of fresh air, earlier in that period he played a very upfront role in an Eels open day. We were all optimistic that we may see the real Matterson.
I am a very strong supporter of Ryles, and continue to be so. Let's hope that the players that maybe being disciplined for whatever reasons don't sit back and sulk but take it on the chin and react positively. God only knows we don't want a reserve grade side of dummy spitters""".
That said lets also hope that some of our very thin skinned supporters who think it is character building to point out all these faults, learn to do the same if applies to them.
Pops we still disagree on this. Here is Mattersons actual thoughts. via a quote from his interview. It was not principle.

It was too late’: Eels star’s shock admission over controversial suspension call
Ryan Matterson has admitted he made a mistake choosing a $4000 fine over a three-game ban, which saw him miss Parramatta’s winless start to the season.
Matterson was charged over a crusher tackle on Dylan Edwards in the 2022 grand final was give less than 48 hours to decide which punishment to accept.
The backrower now claims he thought trial games would be included in the ban but admits there is “no excuse” for missing the first three games of the season.
I don't think that is definitive enough as a statement as why he didn't pay the 4k Bluey, at the time when it happened it was generally accepted as a reason "in principle" I suppose he is the only one that knows the truth.
Reading the rest of the blog it would seem to be rather personal in how judgements have been made.
My opening line in the post was "Obviously Matterson's done something to upset Ryles."
Nothing has been said in the discussion as to what, because no one knows, that's my point!
The fact that everyone seems to hate his guts....is not really the relevant point but certainly circumstantial in this judgement.
Simple question would you prefer to be on a jury and know nothing of the accused or a Lynch Mob that think they know his history because he "snubbed" them in a pub?
