Loyalty is dead

I am amazed at how money really is king. Parramatta fans should all acknowledge how great a trait we have in loyalty as it is a trait sadly lacking in most (not all) other players in this game called rugby league. I have watched Parramatta play since 1974 and loved them since those days. Yes I get angry when they lose, really angry, but ultimately I still stick with them. It is such a disgrace that so many players, coaches and the Phil Goulds of this world are only supporting certain teams for what they can make out of them. I may never have the money they have but I can look at myself in the mirrorand know I have something they can never buy, loyalty. Go Parra, I love you.

  • The contract situation in the NRL is a joke so not just about loyalty they signed legal binding agreement that they are breaking.  Sponsors sign on thinking certain players and teams are backed yet then get these changes mid season.
I don't know any other sporting organisation that treats contracts as nothing more than a temporary agreement till a better offer arrives.
Implement huge fines for any approaches to a contracted player or coach. Also block any moves if it has been proven to have been done prior to a contract finishing.
Also scrap the rule of negotiating 1 year prior to contract is up as well. It was done as players union argued they needed time to move family and get settled to organise schools for kids etc. The fact so many players move mid season and last minute has proven that to be bullsh#t so no contracts till previous contract needed unless it is an extension with existing club or in an agreed trading window once a year.

    • The issue here isn't that the Panthers approached Cleary behind the Tigers back, the issue here is that the NRL doesn't have a formal trading platform that every team, player, agent, coach or executive must follow.

Contracts are only as strong as the will of the two parties involved to enforce them, they are an agreement in principle, nothing more. In the Ivan Cleary case, if the Tigers dig their heels in, he's going nowhere. If on the other hand the Panthers & Tigers can come to some kind of mutually agreeable compromise then Cleary will be coaching the Panthers next year. There is nothing wrong with that as such.

The problem is that the NRL doesn't have a platform whereby the Panthers would have to contact the Tigers to gain permission to speak with Cleary. If they did this would've been all above board.

So this all comes back to what I have been banging on about for as long as I've been on 1EE about the NRL needing to completely overhaul it's entire labour management process. It is so amateurish and ad hoc that the players, clubs, and now coaches are taking matters into their own hands, and quite frankly you can't blame them.

So just to repeat in short my ideas ...

      1) Rookie draft to distribute the best young talent based on need rather than cap position.

      2) The NRL, via the state & district organisations to centrally manage & fund ALL junior development, not the premiership clubs.

      3) Rookie salary scale & standard rookie contracts based on draft position to ensure that clubs don't pay massive overs for unproven talent, ala Kalyn Ponga's deal with the Knights.

      4) Restricted Free Agency to ensure that clubs get the best years out of players they draft. Players can only access Unrestricted Free Agency after completing 7 years service in the league.

      5) Soft Salary Cap that will allow teams to exceed the cap to retain their own free agents but not to recruit another teams free agents.

      6) A Luxury Tax to counterbalance potential abuse of a soft cap by the richer teams.

      7) Free trading of all players and / or draft picks up to June 30 so as to allow teams to fine tune their rosters.

This basic framework is the basis that most professional sports the world over use, with the notable exception of soccer, and one that the NRL, the clubs & the players must embrace.

  • On you Rocky, nice thoughts mate.
  • Rugby league will die in 10 years.Run by a bald headed baboon
    • Kendoza: I said before Greenberg  was selected that if he became CEO it would be the beginning of the end of RugbyLeague in Australia. Since he has become CEO crowds are down , in some cases to uneconomic levels. He should be punted asap. There is a group of Chairmen and CEO`s who support him. Even though Rome burns they play with their fiddles. They need to be punted also.

  • Why did hayne take a 600k pay cut ?
    • Why did Hayne go to the Gold Coast first ?

Why did hayne come back to Parra ?  Becasue The Titans didn’t want him and either did anyone else at the price he was on . One more year at the Titans and yes he would’ve been paid handsomely, but it would’ve likely been the end of his career the way his game was spiraling  .

Plus , we don’t really know he did take a 600k paycut . For all we know he’s getting some TPAs back in Sydney and maybe The Titans bumped him up a bit to leave .  Nobody knows what’s gone on behind the scenes , it’s just media speculation.

      • Actually the only speculation is being done by you Wiz.

  • Firstly, why are you amazed at how money is king ? Have you been living under a rock your whole life ?

Secondly, Parramatta players are no more or less loyal than players at any other club. Take your B&G specs off mate.

Thirdly, players don't support teams, they play for them. Coaches don't support teams, they coach them. Gus is employed by the Panthers to be their GM, loyalty has got sweet FA to do with it. His job is to do the very best for his club. I will say this about Gus, he is as passionate a Rugby League man as you will ever meet, and he passionately believes in the Panthers potential and it's importance to the game of Rugby League given it's huge junior catchment area.

Finally you're a fan, you're supposed to be loyal, players & coaches are paid to do a job, massive difference.

As an after thought, have you ever changed jobs ?

If so, where's your loyalty to your previous employer ?
