LODGE’S SALARY CAP FARCE

Roosters enforcer Matt Lodge has reportedly been forced into signing a $1000 per-week train-and-trial deal as CBA negotiations remain ongoing.

The Tricolours have reportedly been unable to register his contract as they finalise the remaining deals left in their top 30 roster, according to The Daily Telegraph.

The 27-year-old had to sign a deal to train with the Roosters, otherwise he would have begun pre-season uninsured and not earning a single cent.

Lodge was impressive under Trent Robinson after signing a short-term deal last season following his release from the Warriors in May.

The Rugby League Players Association has been in heated negotiations with the NRL and ARLC regarding the newest bargaining agreement.

Lodge and the Roosters have reportedly agreed a deal in principle, but the contract is yet to be signed off by the NRL.

NRL clubs have been left waiting for a confirmed salary cap for the 2023 season and in the process, Lodge has fallen victim.

A number of clubs previously suggested a breakaway competition could be started as CBA negotiations turned ugly.

NRL powerbrokers have reportedly increased the league grant significantly for next season, but the RLPA remains steadfast that the deal tabled reduces the playing group’s share of revenue.

  • Yeah until the NRL get the cap sorted. But Lodge would be valued higher though? Hmmm.

Regardless of whether the value system is gone or not it is still ridiculous on both parts, Lodge and the Roosters being allowed to this is stupid, but the NRL still not setting the cap is stupid too.

    • Is'nt Lodge still getting paid a large sum by the Warriors for next year?

      • Exactly it the Warriors guaranteed his salary for this year against there cap.So in all essence he can basically play on the Roosters cap for free.

        • Which is odd considering the NRL wanted us to pay full tilt to have him play the back half of the season.  Not only did we have to pay his full wage , we had to pay the equivalent to what the Warriors were paying him which was massive overs. And then The Rorters are allowed to waltz in and put him on the same salary as we have reserve graders on.

          • NRL only listens to the smart clubs with powerful board members that know how to push the boundaries. Unfortunately the Parra club isn't one of them

            • Smart? Why should it matter how 'smart' a club is. Either we have rules or we don't. This is meant to be a sport not rock and roll wrestling.

      • I thought he negotiated a one of pay out. Which did include a reduced amount for 2023.

    • Ridiculous it is, I keep hearing that Haas is going to sign with the Roosters.

Maybe this is to make way for Haas?
