Ripper article on being an eels fan. I relate to so much of this being a fan since 1980 as a 10yo in Brisbane. Could never give the eels up, even when Brisbane entered the comp.
Was lucky enough to start supporting Parra as an 8 year old Auburn boy. I clearly remember the 20-0 belting to Manly listening on radio on my birthday (12th September) in the semi in '82. Shedded my first tears for the blue and gold that day only for those tears to turn to joy 2 weeks later. My latest were against the Cows as a couple tears did form probably because of the stress in the dying moments whilst watching on my laptop screaming "Hold, fucking hold!!!". This was 2 hours after the game had ended oblivious to the final outcome as I was at work during game time.
More tears followed in '84 and '85 but they galvanised my support. We've all felt sick in the gut countless times. More bad moments than good but that never broke us. We have the biggest army in NSW with all that failure. Imagine how big would we had been with a bit more success. One of the strangest and unexplainable things of life. A team which gained more and more fans though it failed time and time again. If the stadium would fit 150,000 fans, we'd sell it out.
Parra, I love you today more than I did yesterday and tommorrow I'll love you more than ever.
"The Finn's are renowned for their bravery.
A story pre world one, nothing to do with this Movie.
Two Finn's on the front line facing an advancing Russian Army of over 100000 men. The Russians are advancing on the border between Russia and Finland.…"
