Left Field Recruit: Hastings

We are/or should be looking for a new hooker. What about Hastings from Manly? He'll come cheap, has good skills, a very good goal kicker and is a good tackler. Apparently he is not the decisive player he was made out to be in the press, DCE was the problem. He has to be better than what we have wouldn't he?

  • Maybe for minimum wage. He is talented but his relationships with other players seem dysfunctional. He had the same problem at the roosters.

    • Pops I initially baulked at the idea of making an offer to him, I think he's too good a player to languish in ISP, but if signed, I would think it would need to have clauses regarding his behaviour.  Considering we have  players with issues in the past, more so with gaol time, Hastings I don't think has had that.  He would be far better off in a club that has a better caring nature about it than over on the peninsular.

Outside of that, bringing him here may cause some angst with players who are part of our system and worth keeping, such as Salmon and Mahoney, although he could be great backup in 6, 7 and 9 spots. Only 22 now so has some growing up to do.

Thing also is that he is off contract end of this year with Manly, if he came with Manly paying the majority of his wages, and told he is on trial only, along with options in the eels favour would not be too bad.

  • If the rooster and st George  and Manly cant fix him well I pass

    • And Will seems to get on with everyone in our side.

    • Will Smith brings another dimension in attack, and can cover a few spots in the backline. He has played all over the backline, at this rate he will be our starting forward soon.
    • And we have Mahoney.
  • Manly is currently paying him $340k
per year. Don’t think he will take a massive pay cut and will head overseas.
  • I suspect he should be focusing on his mental health issues and personal welfare before considering leaving manly. Manly and NRL need to work together to get this kids head right.

I realise I might be jumping to conclusions and reading into things too much but listening to the press conference it's clear this bloke has some mental health problems to overcome.
    • I'm pretty sure he mentioned that he is seeing a psychologist.
    • Yeah I hope he gets himself better and has a long career. From interviews he seems like a decent fella. It's not like he is Matt Lodge.
