Snottie, Ryles has the most powerful voice in R&R.
So Ryles clearly sees something in Guymer that you and many here don’t.
My guess is he’s seen as a soldier. A guy who’d run through walls. A guy with the engine to play 80 in the middle.
He didn’t have his best game against the Cows. He missed 11 tackles, with the Lolo train-bumping him off religiously. Mind you, we missed over 50 tackles as a side, with half of them coming through three players: Guymer, Talyn and Tuilagi who was often defending in the middle because of his extra size. Yet all three fought hard for 82 minutes. Commendable toughness.
What doesn’t he have?
Sure, he isn’t your – or those in the Church of Anti-MON’s Apocalypse – ideal super athlete.
Still, it’s probably unrealistic to expect that across an entire 30-man squad.
Guymer doesn’t have a heap of explosiveness, nor super height. He’s probably got a 50-50 mix of slow and fast twitch muscles. He’s not your $1m middle. Or your $1.2m Kaeon. Mind you, Kaeon made as many metres as Guymer this weekend and still missed five tackles. Some of the nonsense on here wanting him at $6m on the cap is delusional; excuse the French.
So what does Guymer have?
The right attitude. Flexibility to play middle or edge. And time. He’s 21 and he’s not going to cause us much cap grief.
If he works hard on aspects of his game, who knows.
Work with a sprint trainer. Work on his body mass. If he puts on 5-10kg of muscle and loses a bit of chubbiness, he probably needs to get up around the 105-110kg mark to better compete with the bigger bodies.
If Ryles and co can also improve his footy smarts, that'll help too. Don’t forget he started as a centre, like Dylan Walker who has more explosiveness, but is probably destined for the middle.
I’d agree with the need for more speed and athleticism in the back five. A guy like Purdue would be a game breaker for us, even if his defence lets him down at times. For me, he’s a special player. Almost generational talent. Time will tell.
I also don’t think Kelly has been as bad as the 1EE mob paints. He’s experienced and has been decent value. He just needs to cut down the errors.
2027 is when Ryles finally gets a clearer cap and we’ve finally started attracting TPAs (which surprised me given we don’t have billionaire sugar daddies) after years of showing a more stable administration with strong sponsorship and commercial savvy than this site gives credit for. Not too long ago we almost lost our NRL licence, largely through our own stupidity and self-cannibalisation.
Sure, we need to recruit outside backs, but I’m not sure how many elite ready-made players are realistically on the market. Most are locked up, and because we’re rebuilding it makes things harder unless you start going silly buggers again with POs and bending over.
Like every club, we’ll need some juniors to come good. Otherwise you’re stuffed.
We need to keep investing heavily in pathways, now more than ever. With expansion, it’ll be even more critical than ever.
Hopefully some of the promising forwards and middles like Brown, Mateale, Ryda Talagi, the Latus, Tuivaiti and co come good.
If Lorenzo and one or two of the outside backs are half as good as the hype, that’ll help too. Lorenzo is a little guy, but in today’s game that can actually be an asset, as Gray and Duffy are showing at Souths. TDS' running game in the middle third with support needs to be used more.
There’s still a lot of work to do, but I’m not as doom and gloom as many on here. There aren't quick fixes.
Samrani is the most improved player in our club. Before his injury he was going well. I just love how he is an all in team player. Nothing selfish, thinks of the best person in the best position gets the ball ( Eg Papali ). His carries are strong and he is aware of players around his pre tackle as opposed to pushing balls in heavy contact becuase you havent thought about who was supporting you.
YES, definatel;y retain him. But I think JR will revert to Will.
This is the worry the fact that we have to use Samrani hose doing a job but revert back to Penisini says a lot about our lack of development in that area.Back 5 Parra have been terrible bringing s juniors through the last decade.
Samrani has defence problems last night but coming back from injury to keep going the way he did impressive. He's always good in attack .if he's defence was OK in previous games he's a keeper
I think Penisini should be put on the wing as he has great carries (when not injured), which is needed out of yardage, and would steam roll most other wingers when finishing off tries. He could be a bit like Greg Marshew for us. Near unstopable at the try line.
Samrani has done enough so far to keep Centre as his position. Not entirely sure about the other centre position, whether Russell keeps it or Nanva. Russell has more runs under his belt and while plenty here like to hate on him when he doesn't have the best day, when he does, they love him and in all fairnes, he is pretty good on those days. Consistency is what he needs most.
The only thing with having Penisini on the wing is him and Kelly would have to fight it out for that spot, but that's not the worst thing in the world.
Matthew, I have been saying that wing is Peni's perfect position for 2 seasons (for the same reason's you espoused)......we must be rare birds because, everyone laugh's at me when I say it!
"He should stay in reserves at least until after the bye and hopefully for the rest of the dead season.
Will find out at 1600 on Tuesday if JR is really all in on the 'future is now' mantra."
"We've made our bed on this one now with the accidental bumping into Volkmans performances of late I feel JR has zero choice but to continue with the mentioned zero choice. If he can leave DB on the bench to give opportunities to the next guy he…"

a lot of the laterall movement issues is because the plant their heels instead of staying on their toes

Penisini is straight up terrible. Someone said he costs us games, which is completely true.
I dunno if I've ever seen a player butcher as many tries as Penisini fingers. Pack his bags, send him to perth with his mate Sean. Or PNG.
Plus he gets beaten by his opposing centre every single week and lets in at least 1 try or more every week.

Samrani has such a high IQ. Proved it many times in his handful of games. He's our best centre hands down.
I think Penisini should be put on the wing as he has great carries (when not injured), which is needed out of yardage, and would steam roll most other wingers when finishing off tries. He could be a bit like Greg Marshew for us. Near unstopable at the try line.
