I wrote a long spiel in supporting Gutho's leadership ability in a recent post and after reading more discussion on another blog's comments, I again reflected on missing ingredients.
Leadership in the end is the person who is making the final decision.....do we agree with that?
Some people will judge that two way's. When Greg Chappel told (not asked) his brother to bowl the final ball underarm, was that good leadership or just bad judgement.....History has answered that.
I was reading an article on the Australian SAS forces in Afganistan where one of the troopers (still an elite) said that everyone gets a voice but we go with the captains call after whatever consideration is made.
We saw one of Australia's finest ever soldiers Ben Robert-Smith humiliated by our pathetic justice system after making life changing decisions for his men (team mates)and his country. Where did his leadership leave him in the wake of our "wokeness" ?
Mark Levy a stand in media guy who I don't mind said "Guth should keep his mouth shut" was this fair when the captains speaks their mind with passion. Is Bellamey showing his leadership when he goes off like a maniac in the coaches box? Don't forget that the most respected Rugby League leader in recent times was Cameron Smith and don't tell me he doesnt polarise people?
The reality is we all have different styles and a good leader lives with them.
The missing ingredient with Gutho and this can be taken two ways "is he a Parra boy" thru and thru? I don't doubt his passion because he leads from the front and his effort is not questioned....I suspect Moses is more a Parra boy historicaly and I believe he should be the one asking/answering the captains challenges type questions.Different horses for different courses?
Hopgood is a leader, unquestioned, whether he is the right one after just one season is problematical and one I would not entertain until he can be "something he is not yet" i.e. a Parra boy, he's a Qlder and will play Origin for them for 10 years. That's fine but the Parra Passion and his inexperience says he is not ready yet.My guess like many on here says one day he will....assuming he stays?
I think co-captains are bullshit especially when Guth is an 80 minute player and Junior is not....Junior interestingly enough is inspirational as a leader playing for Samoa......this shows that same trait we were talking about but is a contradiction because he is "a Parra Boy! "
In summary I don't think leadership comes out of a textbook unless you want to quote Great Statesmen.....
Hopgood is actually quoted as saying when Guth speaks "we all take notice" that is saying to me that Guth is the leader whether he has the "C" next to his name or not.

That's an easy one pops Clint Gutherson.
Get rid of the co captains and just have Gutho
Yeah co-captains is a cheap gimmick to keep certain players happy. For Paulo we all knew was a lead by example type captain, he said it himself he's not very vocal. Thats fine, as long as you lead by example. He didn't in 2023.
I think we need 17 captains. Whoever puts on the jumper should lead
Chief that's what Panthers do. Seems to wworkfor them.
The nfl have a ream with 36 captains
RCG.
Hopgood in a few years time
Lets face it we havent had a captain since Ray Price ....and our record speaks volumes ...
Gutho is the captain, he leads by example with his effort. But after him, bit difficult to choose from. Charlie Guymer, if he is good enough for NRL, is a captain in the making. But out of the current squad, Hopgood for me is the guy to build around as a captain of the future.
Hopgood was captain of of successful team at Panthers and scored the winning try between the posts on GF day to win the game for them when there. A future QSOO player. Queensland have more talent than NSW the only reason it didn't happen this year. Who at Eels better than him?
