Kick it to Lomax, Kick it to Lomax!

I have nothing but respect for Zac. I said when we signed him he was a very big part of our future and I stand by it. Yes, he has some faults in his game, particularly his defensive reads, but his effort and output is simply gobsmacking. I also truly respect Moses and his kicking game. Why oh why, does the team persist with this kick it to Lomax, kick it to Lomax approach. Yes, Zac has scored some brilliant tries using this approach, but it has been demonstrated for many weeks now, that it has been well and truly worked out by opposition teams and defended accordingly. Why are Moses and Ryles persisting with this tactic on such a relentless basis? It is not working as a percentage play. Variety is the spice of life and variety is what places defences in two minds. Look at the tries we have scored or the pressure we have created when we do rarely utilise the chip and chase behind the line, the grubber into the in goal. This team needs to learn that with variety comes doubt and it also enables the team to build pressure rather than turning over possession. It has been frustrating me all season. Why can't Ryles see this?EE

  • 100% agree.  The Momax experiment is kinda done teams are screening his runs.. Hes burning himself for no result. They should stick to the red zone kicks like what Munster does to Coates at Melbourne....its like a cheat code on a computer game they way they can jag a try from this.  We have to be much smarter with this play...its dumb and obvious at the moment.  Is it affecting the back end of the game for him as he is cooked and what impact is this play having on fatigue in his poor goal kicking now

  • Love to see Lomax go away in the off season and find a couple of more yards of pace.

JaC did a lot of speed work with Roger Fabri who also works with Bronson Xerri and Jarryd Hayne way back when.

Love to see Lomax with some more speed next season.

    • Also works with tedesco, young and saab

    • Josh has got a lot of his pace back this year, I see he just got crowned fastest player in league again this year. at 36+ km/h

Tedesco has also gained some pace back this year. Something in being trained by a sprint coach i suspect.

  • A lot of the kicks just aren't great either, either to shallow or not on the goal line. Maybe need some more work with the halves and getting the kicks right so he can at least contest and have a chance to score. No reason why he can't catch and finish like Coates if the kicks are more accurate

  • Most of the kicks we're putting up for Lomax aren't real attacking opportunities, it's just his willingness to compete that allows him to get there and turn them into one. The strike rate is fairly low but there's really not much to lose in most cases.

Moses put in a good grubber for JAC's 2nd try yesterday. I do agree we need to see more variety. Mitch should really be a gun 40/20 kicker but we only see them rarely.

  • Lomax also needs longer boot sprigs, seems to slip alot when turning, lets in tries

  • I've been thinking the same thing.

We're overusing the tactic and opposition just know what's coming on the 5th. I think it was the Raiders game where Joash - instead of giving the ball to Hawkins to bomb to Lomax for the umpteenth time - went the other way and kicked in behind for an easy try to Sean Russell (who only scored because JAC slipped over).

The Raiders were absolutely not expecting it and two players could have scored the try.

The kick to Lomax is and should always be an option - but not the only option!

  • I can see your side of the argument but there is also the argument to be made that most of Moses kicks are long range get us out of trouble kicks so we get the added bonus of Lomax contesting them. and when he doesnt get it our defenders are ready to stop their kick returns (hopefully) look at the tries cowboys scored against us where they took out our catcher in the air there is an art to it and teams seem to do this on purpose Zac needs to try that a bit more, bump the opposition team fullback or winger in the air ball goes to ground then have another player scoop it up and score.

    • I agree, particularly when it is a kick for distance, but when we're in the attacking 3rd it's a telegraphed tactic.

I'm all for Lomax spooking the opposing winger when kicking for territory.
