Josh Dugan says he wants to follow Jarryd Hayne to the NFL

JOSH Dugan says he wants to follow Jarryd Hayne to the NFL.

Just days away from the Dragons’ elimination final clash with the Bulldogs, Dugan has reportedly revealed he has spoken with his manager Paul Sutton about what it would take for him to drop the NRL for a shot at cracking the NFL like Hayne.

Dugan has always appeared to be one step behind Hayne after stepping into the NSW State of Origin No. 1 jumper vacated by Hayne this season.

Dugan said he believes he has the skills and drive needed to succeed in the NFL.

“If I was going to defer to any game I’d like to go to the NFL,” Dugan told Channel 9.

“At the moment it’s just a dream at the back of my mind.

“It’s awesome that Haynesy’s achieved his dream and he’s doing good things over there and he’s opened up the door for a lot of other people as well.

“It just goes to show what a freak athlete he is. He is a special athlete and person.”

Dugan remains contracted with the Dragons until the end of 2017, but admits to being tempted by the prospect of joining Hayne in America.

He said Hayne’s success story could help him attract the attention of NFL scouts and give him a foot in the door at NFL franchises.

“If I had an opportunity to do it, I’d have a crack,” he said.

“I feel like I could make an impact over there as well. We have similar sort of games and he’s a special player and I like to see myself as a similar sort of player.

“I feel like I could definitely do some of the things he’s doing over there.

“I’ve always been confident in my ability and again if I was thrown that challenge I’d like to think I could handle it.”

Dugan declared last month he had no doubt Hayne would succeed in the NFL.

The 25-year-old is also two years younger than Hayne when the former Parramatta Eels star left Australia to chase his dream.

Dugan’s declaration attracted a mixed response on Twitter.

  • Wow. It seems that any old hack can decide to switch codes these days.
  • I was half expecting Ashton Kutcher to jump out at the end screaming "YOU JUST GOT PUNKED!!!"

I loved how both Dugan and Wiedler looked so serious through it all !!!

Not a fan of either of those muppets.

Dugan has always rated himself higher than what he is ...... as for Danny ..... I think most of you know my thoughts on that bloke, so let's bet keep that one unspoken!!!

  • Hayne was just a freak athlete, BUT the one thing I've said 100 times is the reason Jarryd made the 53 man roster is because he WANTED it so bad! He trained is frikken ass off to get there. He studied the play, he had training sessions before he left, he generally wanted to play NFL that's why he left. All these players that now "want" and have a "dream" to play NFL is all bullshit. You can pay a player 2mil but if they aren't 110% ALL IN no doubt they will fail. There is a lot more to the NFL then just simply catching the ball and return it as a special teams player which is was most NRL fullbacks would do. To give it to him yes Dugan is a good rugby league player but NFL complete different as we all know. He is way to slow for starters, in his interview he said if I was given an opportunity to go..... Jarryd didn't have a "opportunity" all Jarryd had was determination and mind strength.
  • LOL At Dugan comparing himself to Hayne first off Jarryd can read.

  • Even if we ignore Jarryd's freakish athleticism and footy skill, he has one thing very few NRL players have, which cannot be coached or nurtured. He has a powerful will and sheer determination - few mortals can even compare - when he chooses, he controls the game and can almost single handedly effect a positive outcome (Game 1, Origin 2014). This is why Dugan, Inglis, RTS and even Tedesco don't compare. They may have power, speed, agility and skill, but Jarryd is still of a different level of player (mental focus and mindset of iron).
  • You're right DK, this is a good laugh.
Dugan should have been more realistic and compared himself to a dugong.
  • The blokes a joke.
  • Maybe if he hit the roids and learnt how to kick.
  • Dugan is in dreamland. Hayne is a once in a lifetime freak of nature!! In terms of ability, Dugan couldn't tie Haynes shoelaces!!
  • He would enjoy the breaks in play. The bloke lays down and cry's after every contact.
