Jersey Numbers: Change on the Horizon

Today at the CEO meeting in Sydney the salary cap was backed unanimously by the club leaders. This aside another more interesting and playful issue was raised within the meeting. The idea of players choosing the numbers on the back of their jerseys. This system would follow that of AFL, cricket and the NBA. I, myself am extremely fond of the idea as it would allow clubs to have retired jerseys (aka #23 - Micheal Jordan is retired at the Chicago Bulls) and would raise the prestige of the clubs. Also i think it would do wonders for mechandise sales with fans being able to buy a jersey significant to one player. Critics of the idea have slammed it as it shuns tradition though the majority of people seem keen on the idea. Even the stressed NRL CEO David Gallop offered a tentative but positive opinion towards the idea. Overall i believe that this idea would do wonders for the NRL and is a good positive vibe story in a season that seems to have been thrown into an outlook of doom and gloom.

Thoughts??

  • good idea
  • I don't like it...I like the idea of having the numbers represent the position played and think it would be more difficult to tell who the hell you were looking at, especially teams that aren't your own.Plus I think its too American, which is always a negative in my opinion...
The only positive I see is the ability to 'retire' the number out of respect for a great player but overall I would prefer it remain as is.
    • Totally agree sharkies, your spot on there
    • I agree with you 100%. I think it is a terrible idea. At this rate we will have multiple players playing for Australia or test matches wearing the same numbered jersey.

Stupid American ideas, why the hell do we follow those fools!
  • As far a rep team go the players would have to have different number as to avoid clashes. Player names on jerseys might help identify the players?
    • Aaah yes BUT, if a jersey number is part of a players contract, who will have to give up his number for the other? What about if part of the players 3rd party sponsorship etc, has that number? Too many troubles. It's not worth it!
  • Sorry Johno, how could the number be part of the contract? It's just a number.
    • Simple, if they get to choose their number it has to be written down some where. Also for merchandising, it will have to be licensed for that player.
  • Thanks
    • It would be interesting to see what numbers some guys would pick though, especially Willie Mason!

If our game didn't have the numbers equating to a position, like grid iron, it maybe workable. It's probably the main reason I don't like it. That and I'm an old prick who doesn't like changing stuff that isn't broken......... :-)
