  • I can't understand why everyone is worried about it now when this has been on the table for 2-3 years but now Tax free and Free TPAs is now unfair 😂 why wasn't there so much noise around this when Expansion was first floated.

The players and there families no what there getting themselves into before going up there.Players aren't uprooting there families not understanding and knowing all the facts before doing so.Alot of this is scaremongering.I floated this to a certain poster on here that Expansion was going to hurt the nrl more so than help it because the talent base elite talent at best was stretched right now less the 2 new teams. But apparently not the argument was there's plenty of talent. When in all essence there isn't there's the haves and have nots.

Vlandys and co can say what they like but in all essence all this is really is a cash grab for the game more product to sell regardless if it's good for the game or not.

    • The reality is the PNG team is nothing more than a political pawn. It's not even hidden.

Albo literally came out and said when he handed over $600 million to set up this team and facilities to PNG that this was on the proviso that PNG don't let the Chinese military build bases on their land.

The reality is PNG is a highly, highly dangerous country with extreme levels of crime and corruption. No player in their right mind would go there unless there were some basically hard to refuse incentives. Making it tax free basically doubles their salary cap, and I absolutely guarantee you there are a million other clauses and incentives that are well compensating these players for the service they're giving to the country (remember, this ain't about the footy, it's about stopping China building a military foothold on our doorstep).

There are so many ways that this can turn out bad, but neither federal politics nor the NRL are known for their long term planning. They just do what is in the best interests of them right now.

The NRL was used as a bargaining chip by the government. Nothing about this has anything to do with what is good for the game. It'll be what it'll be.

    • Coryn possibly most of probably the majority of us didn't fully understand the full ramifications of this whoe deal between  the Government and PNG and how it will affect the hole game .        I suppose . All Albo and his mob is worried about China creeping down our way and getting  closer.ihate bringing Politics into it as I've stated many times on here I don't like politics coming onto a forum for our sport . But in this case this PNG thing is exactly what it is about Politics plus Pete the arrogant one is right in it upto his eye balls .just my humble opinion

      • Yep Vlandys no doubt is influenced by what sport is like in the US I have zero doubts about that.Sport/Entertainment is all about money generation first and foremost most. His move is getting and using hard earned Aussie tax payer dollars to spread his gospel.Financially he's setting the game up for long term gain all while punishing AFL and every other sport in his marketing area.Ill give PVL that it's smart but for the purist like us it's watching what we once knew continually get diluted.

    • The PNG Chiefs can only sign 30 players on more than minimum salary. Teams aren't going to have to overmatch them for every player.

      • The fact that the players are getting paid tax free means ALL players for the Chiefs will get cash in hand equivalent to double their salary if they played for an Aussie team.

A player on a $400,000 contract takes home $240,000 in Australia, and $400,000 in PNG. It 100% undermines the salary cap, and it's by design. Otherwise no Australian players would go there.

    • The NRL has become a product to sell to the highest bidder and to generate as much income as possible. It's no longer a sporting spectacle where the best skills are on display. Cricket has done that for years now with T20, and to be honest that has been detrimental to the pure sport, which is Test cricket. In fact the high scores we are seeing this year could be considered comparable to T20 or AFL with constant ticking over of the scoreboard.

      • My concern is how PVL is so attracted to US sport he will consider this idiotic conference system being floated around.

But it's funny how he is trying to get higher price yet is open to less games. The more games yearly the more money.

  • The one we need to keep an eye on is Chris Petrus. He's from PNG and the lure of representing his home country's first NRL side could be too good to pass up. But he's still very young and may not quite be NRL ready in 2028.

Jez Funa-Iuta, Guymer and Kautoga could be the ones that we need to build our backrow around from 2028 on.

Good news on our junior props stock though. Alongside Tuivaiti and Moretti, you have Teancum Brown, Mataele, Talagi, Pryke and Visconti. That's a really good crop of guys, lots of different player profiles and some already have NRL experience, while others are climbing the ranks pretty quickly. Good chunk of those guys are playing NSW Cup this week.

    • If Petrus is from PNG and opts to play for the Chiefs so he can be at home, good luck to him.

There will be ridiculous 1EE members, and by now we know who the self-appointed R&R experts are, who will reduce his potential decision down to "club failed to keep". But a player returning to where he was born or grew and may have much family is a huge factor and probably "the" factor. Hard to begrudge that. But also, not credible to reduce to "failed R&R". But those experts will claim it anyway!
