When were your fondest memories living in Australia when your truly thought "this is the best country in the world" free from all the bullshit other countries have?

For me it was the 80's, the old mans BBQ's with his mates decked out in penguin shirts and stubby shorts, the ladies with big hair full of hairspray, a table full of cubed cheese, green olives with toothpicks and the mandatory pavlova. "Grab your old man a beer" before they put ads on the TV warning against this practise. Not being able to swim in the pool for 30 minutes after eating a burnt sausage and onion sandwich covered in dead horse (and no, I'm not a redneck to the "minority" readers) Beaches full of bikinis and cricket, the eels winning 4 grand finals, the Americas Cup, no understanding whatsoever about politics or political correctness, hence seeing the Prime Minister sculling a beer and calling some employers a bum. Bum.... was funny to hear as a kid.

In light of all that has changed from that period in time to the present one. Where did it all go wrong?....

 Lax immigration policies. Full stop.

I live abroad now and unfortunately find myself telling others when they ask me about life in Australia "It has changed, it used to be a much better place. Am I wrong?

  • I dont believe its all immigration Bert, we have plenty of great immigrants, its the sick ideologies our govt has let creep into the country to become the norm.

Every single country this ideology has gone to its damaged and its destroying the planet we live on.

    • I totally agree Snake, it is not ALL immigrants by any means, but our pathetic immigration policies over time and politicians putting their heads in the sand & spewing out PC by allowing these scumbag, welfare sucking "minority" into this country IMO is the exact reason why the 80's couldn't just roll on.

Life as we knew it in this country was great!

  • You had to be totally ignorant and deeply lost in a state of denial and apathy because we went from WWII to the Cold War, to the Korean War, to the Vietnam War, to hundreds of other wars and then to terrorism all the while the cost of living gradually went through the roof, the privatisation of what all Australian citizens once owned as their common-wealth eventuated, the Australian $ becoming worthless, it''s now the U.S. 1$ (federal reserve note)) thanks to rapid inflation, and for an average family of 4 Australians now hitting beyond 160% debt to income - for every 1$ earn't they now carry at least a debt of $1.60 - the perpetuity of debt enslaving all future generations as economic slaves for a whole life-time and this was all engineered within 70 years.

  • We all know what the problem is mate . It's a global thing not just an Aussie thing . You turn the news on and there's one common theme . If the people of this religion were serious about modernising it to suit Australia and fit in they'd start by campaigning to get rid of their backwards evil looking leaders here and get some spokespeople that speak English for starters .

When the guy we see representing their community looks like the devil himself and addresses us in mumbo jumbo with an interpreter, it hardly paints a picture of intergration does it . I believe we can all live together , but only if they meet us halfway . At the moment they aren't even driving in our direction . ( well the ones who aren't trying to run us down with their cars that is )
  • Bloody Liberals hey!!!
  • The best decade in my life ( apart from now) was definitely the 1980's
  • I've been away from oz for a while (since 96 when I came on holiday for 3 months. We left Aus for good in 1989.

The 80's were indeed great. Parra was great and life was so much more simple.

My great uncle came to Aus in the mid fifties and with his wife were able to buy a house in Randwick with 3 bedrooms. They hardly spoke the language and both worked in factories, my uncle for wholesale butchers chopping up meat all day and my aunt as a seamstress. That house is now worth over 1 mil with a front and back yard. Worked in those factories their whole lives yet were able to buy a big home in a nice area whilst also raising two kids, paying off the mortgage and payed for their kids wedding too. You cant do that anymore.

My divorced aunt lives in the house now with her daughter. She works in the catering department for a hospital and my cousin in a chemist's. They struggle to make ends meet and have been renting out the spare bedroom for $250/week to make ends meet. That's how tough life has become. My cousin said she had to save up for 2 years just to be able to come to Greece on holiday for a month last year.

  • Things have definitely changed . The 80s and early 90s for me were great .
To many "do gooders " these days .
A lot of these issues today could have been fixed with a wooden spoon and a belt when these animals were young . Kids are definitely not getting the discipline or the life lessons previous generations got .
    • I think the cane was abolished in 1987. I remember we still had in in 86 as I was on the receiving end a couple times for fighting. I was generally well behaved and I couldn't get my head round the sh*t kids would do in high school and get away from it. I remember the female teachers being in tears several times. Teaching at JJ Cahill High School was like being a warder in Long Bay Jail. Only difference was you had no power to pummel the little kents. JJ was great on Monday mornings when all the merch stolen over the weekend would be brought in. Walkmans, cd's, trainers, track suits, jeans you name it!!! Mind you I'd do pretty well selling packs of ciggies after receiving orders. My old man who sold them in his milk bar had no idea :)

It was at that time I lost my mate Ali from Fiji who'd bring in the merch. He was only 14 when he and his older cousins were nicked and he was sent to Juvie. Never saw him again. :(
