Just wondering what others think. I know I'm only an old bloke but have watched the game grow and change so much over the years. But is it going to far?

The reasons is it the speed of the Athletes of today or the rule changes like the 6-agains and the dubious refereeing decisions.

Watching tonight's match Cowboys v Sharks there was 80 points scored in 80 minutes. Even the commentators made the point of saying it was ridiculous.

Personally, I am beginning to think the amount of players going to be needed on the bench if things keep going the way the NFL is headed will need to grow even more than what has transpired for this season. I'm not only talking about the Eels but all teams as I honestly think it will catch up to All teams.

I know there will be some say your only an old fart and to get with the modern game. They may well be right. But the more I'm watching games i just think it's going overboard. All this is just my humble opinion wondering what othes think

  • Totally Agree.

The amount of points being scored per game is ridiculous.

The long standing record of teams conceding 50 not being contenders will surely fall soon.

The current game conditions mean scoring 50 is nothing extraordinary, therefore conceding 50 is nothing extraordinary.

  • It is becoming unrecognisable to the game we all grew up watching and loving. The issue is the consistancy with calls, it has always been a bit of an issue with the game, but it's never been worse and certain games are now significantly manipulated to the point it stinks of corruption, this round has already seen some awful calls and the refs hardly get dropped from poor performances.

I think we can all agree that 6 agains can work if it is used for obvious infringements, as in the Dogs game last weekend, but when a game starts off and one team has the ball for so many consecutive tackles, it can be essentially over 20mins in and it isn't fun to watch. Refs should use it with caution and treat it similar to a sin bin, where unless for an obvious infringement, don't call.

Another big concern is the speed of the game is also causing too many injuries, and rules need to be adjusted, otherwise some of these players will have much shorter careers than they would have in the past. NRL really need to adjust rules, so the speed isn't too reckless, first thing they need to do is get rid of Peter Vlandys, he has made too many changes too fast and gambling has become way too much of a focus.

    • My thoughts exactly Green Eel and that was one of the reasons for this blog to see if my thoughts were on the right track as i said why can't the powers that be see how our great game is getting stuff once again thanks to all

      • They don't just see it Hector, they like it. What we see as Bugs they call Features.

Vlandys isn't interested in the same things I am....but he figures he can "educate" me.

        He is wrong

    • You've got to stop thinking of it as a game anymore it just isn't it's an entertainment event that's designed to part everyone's hard earned into the machine and rinse wash repeat. The game is purely that now forget about thinking what it was because it's never going back to that.

Its purely about bums on seats eyes on TV and basically a money generator that's what it is and that's how the games being built to survive.I mean you have a look at the Warriors Dolphins game last night in Wgtn the only other time that place is full is if the ABs are playing or a well known musician or entertainer is playing outside of that it's barely ever full. This is what the nrl want so the product has to mirror that with regards to entertainment value.V'Landys and co no this they understand this and as mentioned the game will continue to look like it does.

      Purists be damned.

      • Well im sorry Coryn . But he can shove his so called entertainment and gives us back our game

        • If we went down that road they'd be running meat raffles and wondering why the game and players are making no money. It's a common theme through a lot of professional sport world wide the nrl isn't immune that's how it's going to go and the game for the purist is pretty much dead.

As soon as player safety took presidence and shoulder charges and anything that looked half pie high then you saw what we have now. Then there was not being able to hit little men then they banned unlimited interchange because they could see little men were getting bashed out of the game go figure. So the answer was fatigue and safety first and now what we have is a track meet. The timelines been there to see for years the games not going back just as well you have other platforms to watch that because as mentioned this is the game now.

      • Problem is that if I don't think of it as a "game" I won't think about it at all....like Rugby 7's or WWE.

Purists would have some power here if they weren't also the least likely to switch off.

        Rusted on = fucked over

  • Good blog, Hector. Ivan Cleary had similar thoughts to you about increasing the bench and interchange.

There are too many six agains this year. It's pedantic, and it's not just they can decide a game in a 10-15 minute period. Or lead to more fatigue and Injuries. But all teams commit ruck infringements and are inside the 10m all game long.

To top it all off, refs seem to try to balance the ledger later – for optics – and strategically put the whistle away when it suits.
