In defence of Hayne

I have a couple of issues that I need to address here. The first is his dealings with the refs. Hayne does not have a good reputation with the refs in spite of the fact that he has tried to change his approach this year. What I'm sure is frustrating Hayne is the different treatment that the refs give certain players (see my ref blog on this). Players like Lyon and Smith are allowed to get in refs faces all match (in spite of the new rules on this) and the refs actually provide detailed explanations. Let me quote from Fridays match "go away Brett I'm talking to Jamie". What the?!?!Our coach is frustrated. In the stands and at home we are angry, calling out and chanting. So on Friday Hayne gets the ball knocked out blatantly and indeed if it was parra that did it, does anyone here doubt that we would have been penalised? A penalty to us gets an 8 point lead. Instead it's a lost ball and Hayne calls out, "Your rubbish or that's rubbish. He is then penalised! I know that given the calls this year most of us would have lost the plot there too. As for the ref making comment to him about already getting the penalty Hayne was pointing out issues similar to what other captains do. How do the refs reply to others? "Ok we'll look at that". Seriously they treat Haynes approaches with disdain even when he approaches no differently to others. My other issue is people's perceptions of his performances. Some people even believe he did not have a strong game on Friday night. It's like he has to score a freakish individual try to be considered to have had a strong game. I thought his performance on Friday was one of his toughest matches all year and that he, IDG and Sandow were hard to split for match honours.

  • If anyone had control over hayne's approach to the refs it's Arthur. He is now saying at the pressers that the club is baffled by the decisions. The whole club feels the same way. On Friday it worked to galvanise our resolve.
    • So right sixties and brissy.

I don't see how the refs can consistently allow Lyon to breach the rule no matter what tone or manner he speaks in! It's annoying, strategic and supposedly illegal. Shts everyone to tears.

"Friday it worked to galvanise our resolve" definitely. It's like everyone stepped up a cog knowing that they had to win this the hard way almost in defence of their captain. I hope it's the lesson that our young side carries with them into many more games.

Who knows may have been the best thing to have happened?

  • Hayne can open up defences without touching the ball, where ever he is in the line the defence has too mark and watch him, his opponents need to know where is at all times.

When is has the ball the defence is just mesmerized, it's impossible to know if Hayne is going to explode into the defence or let the ball go. We are always going to be chance to score out wide when Hayne is running the ball.

His presence on the field is like an extra man.

    • Spot on Joseph. It's obvious u r watching our matches very closely and seeing things as they are.
  • Hayne was individually brilliant against the titans, sharks and raiders. Then I feel he was heavily marked v the dogs and had a quieter game. Seeing this, and knowing manly would do the same as the dogs, he moved into first and 2nd receiver and sucked in multiple defenders which allowed him to flick pass to players running off him and that caused the manlys defence havoc. This is what makes hayne so dangerous. Mark Haynes runners he will cut u open, mark up on hayne and he will release his runners. I feel Friday nights game was one of Haynes best of the year. The way he played is why so many people said it wasn't the hayne show the whole team contributed. In my eyes it was the hayne show just another side of it. U ask toovey if hayne had a big game.
    • Exactly. It is what makes Hayne so important. His presence alone creates hesitation and confusion in the defence. So his different roles within the team is an extra string to the bow.
  • I hadn't forgotten because Sterlos comments helped to highlight it on the TV coverage when I watched the replay. At the game his constant questioning helped to fire up the crowd. Judas Lyon should have been sent away but he is one of those players allowed to break the rule/directive that I highlighted in my refs tip sheet blog.
  • Yes u could imagine the confused look on the opposition players faces when their coach tells them to mark hayne closely but stop his support runners as well. They would have a WTF look on their faces.
    • Hayne makes the others in our team a greater threat and which develops their confidence.
  • Maybe we could sell Hayne and buy 2 decent forwards?

"True as. A good sign to me was Hopgood Pensini both out and 2 players slotted in no drama. Tells me his system is starting to sink in and we will look more Melbourne like as time goes on. Just needs time to coach it all into them "
