It's all connected though. Penrith's big advantage in the last 6 years has been the way their backline takes the ball carrying pressure off their middles. At their peak, Leota and JFH were averaging between 120 and 150 metres per game (I'm leaving out 2020 as it's so out of whack it basically needs its own stat category. Meanwhile Brian To'o and Dylan Edwards averages between 170 and 210 metres per game.
They get the sets rolling, allow the Penrith middles to recover and then step up their middle defence to pin opponents on the goal line.
Having at least 2 backs that average 10m or more per carry to start sets mean your forwards get a rest and can use their energy in defence to limit the opponents' yardage, causing fatigue and pressure which then becomes cyclical pressure and leads to dropped balls and errors.
💯 and it's why they were so tough to break down defensively because there middles always had alot of juice to defend .A guy that not many talk about for them is Mitch Kenny not a flashy runner or flashy at doing anything but he's physically tough and he's close to the best defensive hooker in the game.
Thats the thing that stands out for me about Riff defense and that back 5.I understand there's more to them than that but when they were dominant 13-14 a game and like you say there outside backs at least 2 of them go for 200 plus running metres a game. It's nie on the recipe if your asking me.
Its where we are weak that yardage game from the back 5 it can really help us and hence why losing Lomax is a stone a pointy farker at that living in our shoe.
Iongi will help but we need more from the others.JAC great finisher but his yardage game is garbage,Kelly Penisini Russell you'd be lucky to see 100 a week from these guys if they do more that's a good week and like the mentioned 100 x 2 every week and don't break a sweat doing it.
Actually Super and you are spot on Coryn, that's why Burton at 5/8 and Xerri and Shiba makes for a backline that can match anyone, JAC will think its Xmas not having to do hit ups and the vacant wing spot can go to a Ho'o look alike in Pennisini, playing on the wing like I suggested.
I really thought in 2016 when we signed Kieran Foran that was our circuit breaker with him in the mix with the team he had around him I thought we would have been top 4 for that year and many years after that. How cruel it was the front office managed to screw that also.

Nope, our forwards are nowhere near good enough
let's say you add them + Hindy and Fuifui then yes I think we would be a threat
You don't think the yardage of Hayne and Semi would lay a better platform for our forwards?
it won't be enough, their yardage won't help our slow ruck in the middle

If you add prime fui fui and Hindy.cause even with prime Hayne and semi.our fowards would just be a letdown
Prime Nathan Brown and Beau Scott in our foward pack would go along way.
How under appreciated is prime N Brown for us
Not be me.
